Harbor City is located at the foot of Palos Verdes and bordered by the city of Lomita, Wilmington, and San Pedro. Harbor City is located 14.4 miles from Los Angeles, 1.0 miles from Manhattan Beach, 1.4 miles from Redondo Beach, and 2.0 miles from Hawthorne.

What is now Harbor City was part of the land that was granted by the Spanish Empire in 1784 to Juan Jose Dominguez and divided into rancheros.  In 1848 land from many of the rancheros were divided and sold.  This land was then settled by American immigrants.

The 2009 population of Harbor City was 24,168. The estimated median household income in 2009 was $54,220. The median age of Harbor City residents in 2009 was 31.2 years. The median rent (2009) was $913.   The cost of living in Harbor City is higher than the national average.

The population density as of 2009 was high at 7,074 people per square mile. The racial demographic of Harbor City (2009) indicated – 48.1% Latino, 25.1% White, 10.7% African American, and 14.1% Asian.  The percentage of Asian and African American residents in Harbor City are higher than average.  Approximately 36% of the residents of Harbor City are foreign born with Mexico and Korea the most common foreign places of birth.

Harbor City is not home to any college or university but this city is located less than 10 miles from several major colleges and universities such as California State University-Domenguez Hill (Carson), West Los Angeles College (Culver City), City University-Los Angeles (Inglewood), University of La Verne (La Verne), University of Southern California (Los Angeles), Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles), and Los Angeles Southwest College (Los Angeles).  Cities that are located near colleges and universities benefit from storage units because students living in this area may be in need of secure storage for excess items or to store their personal items during the summer months.  Students attending colleges from out of state or from outside the country will be looking for self storage in Harbor City solutions during the summer months when they must remove all items from their dorm.
