A Place for My Lawn Care Equipment

As a homeowner, I'm proud to keep my lawn in top condition all the time. I actually enjoy doing it on my own as much as possible, which is why I don't pay someone else to take care of my lawn, like many of my neighbors do. When I first moved into my Hawthorne home, though, I didn't think I would be able to take care of my own lawn, simply because there wasn't any place for me to keep basic lawn care equipment like my mower and trimmer and leaf blower.

So I set out to find a solution to this problem that would work well for me and my family, and that's when I found the US Storage Centers Hawthorne Self Storage location. The Hawthorne Self Storage location is a great option for me because it offers me an affordable place to keep my lawn care equipment, so that I can keep up on my own lawn by myself.

Choosing US Storage Centers

When I was hunting around for different options for my lawn care equipment, I went through several different options. One of the most appealing was building a shed in the lawn that would hold my mower and leaf blower and such. But that would have taken up the space where we wanted to put a play house for the kids!

So instead of doing that, I looked into self storage locations around Hawthorne and Manhattan Beach. While some of the self storage locations I looked at offered much to be desired, the US Storage Centers Hawthorne Self Storage location was definitely a great option, as far as I could see.

Reasons to Use a Hawthorne Self Storage Unit for Business Paperwork Storage

As a financial professional, I've counseled lots of clients to use off site storage for their various bits of business paperwork. Whenever I tell them to move their paperwork somewhere else, I always recommend that they check out US Storage Centers Hawthorne Self Storage. There are lots of reasons to use self storage for business paperwork in general, but there are also some reasons that I recommend US Storage Centers Hawthorne Self Storage in particular. Here's what I tell my clients:

You Have to Keep Everything!

Now, you don't have to keep all of your business paperwork for the entire life of your business, but you do have to keep pretty much every piece of paperwork for at least a year. Most paperwork needs to be kept between three and seven years, and some needs to be kept for the entire time your business lasts.

All that paperwork ends up taking way more space than you think it will, even if you're only running a very small business. So I always let clients know that storing paperwork offsite through a place like US Storage Centers Hawthorne Self Storage is a viable option that can help them make sure they keep all that paperwork together and organized.

You Have to Keep it Organized

I deal with way too many clients who end up with piles and piles and stacks of paperwork in a small business office or a home office, only to find that it takes them literally days to sort through everything when it's time to do the taxes. Seriously, I've dealt with client who operate this way on an annual basis! In the long run, all this does is slow down the tax process, land them with late fees, and waste their valuable time come April.

Look, if you keep all that paperwork organized, you don't have to dread April every year. (At least, you won't have to dread the spending days finding paperwork part.) If you don't have space in your office or home office for several file cabinets so that your business paperwork can be properly organized, then you definitely need to look into offsite paperwork storage through a place like US Storage Centers Manhattan Beach Self Storage!

Even a small storage unit with a few file cabinets is better than a huge room with no organizing system! Renting a storage unit is the impetus many business owners need to invest in file cabinets and to set up a system that works for them. I've talked to so many business owners who are so grateful that they rented a unit and set up an organized filing system when the next tax time rolls around! These people are so grateful that they don't have to deal with the paperwork mess all the time anymore!

It Isn't Expensive

For many business owners, renting a small US Storage Centers Hawthorne Self Storage unit is actually significantly cheaper than getting a larger office or adding on to their home office. If you're looking into larger spaces just because you need more storage for your paperwork, don't rule out renting a small self storage unit for your paperwork! It's easy, and it's usually a lot cheaper than getting a bigger office in general for your business!

Hawthorne - Making My House Look Good Enough To Sell

I knew when I started thinking about selling my home that I would probably have to invest in a Hawthorne Self Storage unit while I was in the process of selling it. I knew it because I have a pretty crowded space. That's how I like it, personally. It feels cozy to me to have extra furniture and really big pieces, but I know that's not what most people like. Plus, all the extra clutter tends to cover over the unique selling points of my home.

So, before I even looked into getting a realtor for my home, I checked out Hawthorne Self Storage options. That's when I came across the US Storage Centers Manhattan Beach Self Storage location, which turned out to be perfect for my needs. The US Storage Centers Hawthorne Self Storage center was affordable, close to home, and very secure. Plus, in talking with the manager, I knew that they really did care about their customers.

The manager of the Hawthorne Self Storage location was even kind enough to give me some great advice on storing my furniture so that it would stay in good shape and would take up as little space in a storage unit as possible. Here are some of the best furniture storage tips the manager gave me:

1. Protect against humidity: Even watertight storage units like mine at the US Storage Centers Hawthorne Self Storage location can cause problems with mold, mildew, and weird smells if you aren't careful about humidity. I didn't want to pay for a climate controlled unit, and the manager assured me that if I took steps to protect my furniture from humidity, I would be fine with a regular unit. Here's what I did to protect against humidity:

  • I put all the furniture up on pallets off the floor. That way if the floor became damp, the furniture wouldn't become damp, too. Plus, it allowed things to stay dry during humid weather since they weren't touching the floor.
  • I left space between pieces of furniture so that humidity wouldn't get trapped and cause warping and other damage. I also left space between the furniture and the side walls of the storage unit.
  • I covered my furniture in cotton cloths if the pieces needed protection from dust. Plastic coverings can cause moisture to build up, which can cause issues. Cotton is breathable, though, so it doesn't have these problems.
  • I put a coat of oil on my metal furnishings before I put them in storage – that went for the legs on my dining room table and whatever other metal I could find. That kept the metal from rusting if things got really humid in the unit.

2. Take things apart: I hadn't really thought about disassembling pieces like my dining room table and chairs and my bed frame. Putting these pieces of furniture in storage disassembled saved a ton of space, which meant I was able to get a smaller unit than I'd originally thought I would be able to have.

Storing Baby Stuff in Hawthorne

Moving with a New Baby

Some people think we're crazy, but we ended up moving about a week after our first baby was born. We didn't really plan it that way. It just sort of happened. We had to sell our home and buy a new one, and we just couldn't get all the loose ends tied up before the baby arrived. The whole process was a little hairy, but one of the best things we did for ourselves was to invest in a Hawthorn Self Storage Unit before the whole process got started. Here's how it worked for us.

When we first figured out that we were probably going to move right around the time of our due date, we decided that it would be ridiculous to set up a nursery. Besides, we were trying to sell our house, and painting that extra bedroom blue or pink wouldn't add anything to the appeal of the home! But we didn't want to wait until the absolute last minute to buy things for our baby, either. Plus, we had friends and family members waiting in the wings to give us things we needed for our baby well ahead of our due date!

So, we decided to check out Hawthorn Self Storage units, and we found a Manhattan Beach Self Storage location called US Storage Centers. The location was close to where we lived and to where we wanted to move, and it was easy to access. Plus, it was safe, secure, and affordable. All these things added up to make this Hawthorn Self Storage location the perfect option for our needs.

We went ahead and rented a small Hawthorne Self Storage unit, and we ended up using it right away for non-baby-related items. When the realtor made some suggestions about clearing away some of the clutter in our home so that we could make it more appealing, we promptly boxed things up and put them in the storage unit. That only took up a bit of the space, though, so we knew there was plenty of room left for baby items.

A few weeks before our baby shower, we set out to register for the things we would need for our baby. Of course, the list included a crib, bassinet, changing table, swing, and all the big stuff, plus all the small essentials we thought a baby might need. At our baby shower, we were lucky to receive many of the things we had registered for, plus a ton of baby clothes and toys that hadn't been on our list because we figured that people would buy them for us anyway.

Hawthorne Self Storage for My Hunting Gear

Hunting is one of those hobbies that you know from the start is going to take up lots of room, since there's so much gear involved. When I was single, there was enough space in my pad to keep all my hunting gear right there on hand. Now that I have a wife and kids, though, that's just not the case anymore. Plus, I had to keep my multiple guns and bows in the house where the kids have easy access to them. Even a gun safe doesn't make me feel that much better about keeping more than just my hand gun at home. Luckily, there is a place called US Storage Centers Hawthorne Self Storage nearby to my home where I can keep my hunting gear and not have to worry about anything going wrong with it at home.

Lots of people assume that hunting gear just means a gun or a bow and nothing else. Some guys hunt like that, but not me. I've got a ton of other gear, too. Like game cameras and portable tree stands. That's all not to mention the myriad of decoys, calls, and hunting clothes I have for different hunting seasons out here in California. Sure, if you only hunt one type of animal, you can probably get away with only having a little bit of hunting gear, but if you're a year-round hunter like me, then you need a place to keep a whole bunch of extra gear, too.

When I got married, I started looking around for Manhattan Beach Self Storage, which is when I came across the Hawthorne Self Storage location called US Storage Centers. There are a few different reasons that I chose this particular Hawthorne Self Storage location, even though it's not the closest possible storage unit to my home.

For one thing, the Hawthorne Self Storage location was very secure, which was important to me because I had paid a pretty penny for some of my hunting gear. When I went in to talk to the manager about it, he let me know all of the little security secrets that US Storage Centers employs. For one thing, there are cameras everywhere, and the manager lives on site, which is just a good deterrent for thieves, even if he's not actively on the job twenty-four hours a day.

Also, though, you have to actually punch in a code to get back into the storage lot, and that code is tied into the door of your individual unit. When you punch in your code, you deactivate that unit's alarm, but if someone accesses the unit without punching in your unique code, then the unit alarm will go off. It's a great way to keep people from breaking into the units. Even if they open the door, they're likely to be off like a shot before they can steal anything.

My Self Storage Story - Hawthorne

Using Storage During the Moving Process

There's really nothing like moving to make you feel like a crazy person, is there? I really and truly do detest moving, but sometimes, it's just a necessity. Six months ago, my husband and I had our second baby, and we really just had to move into a bigger house. So, we hired a realtor to list our own house, and then we started looking at houses on the market. The whole process was relatively smooth – for all that we were moving – but we couldn't have done it without a Hawthorne Self Storage location called US Storage Centers!

Here's how it all went down: First, we knew we couldn't buy a new house until we had sold ours, but we also had a couple of houses in mind that we already knew we loved. We were just crossing our fingers that the house would sell quickly. Luckily, that's exactly what happened. I'm still a little shocked that a house could go within a few weeks of being listed in today's shaky economy, but I guess we just got lucky or were blessed or something!

Unfortunately, selling our house quickly meant we had to move out of it really quickly, too. The house that we had our eye on wasn't move-in ready, but we were trying to hustle the buying process along as much as we possibly could. We had to be out of our own house an entire month before the new one would be ready for us!

We were at a loss as to what to do with all of our stuff when my husband happened to drive by the US Storage Centers location for Manhattan Beach Self Storage on his way home from work one day. The house was already ¾ packed up, but we hadn't figured out what to do with all our stuff at that point. My husband stopped by to talk to the manager at the Hawthorne Self Storage location, and together they worked out what type of storage we would need for our two-bedroom house.

The manager of the Hawthorne Self Storage location suggested we opt for a 10x10 storage unit. It didn't look very big to us, but the manager helped us understand how we could lay out the storage in order to fit more furniture and boxes in it. For instance, he told us to put the couches up on end so that they would take up less floor space, and he also told us to make sure we stacked boxes all the way up to the ceiling so we utilized absolutely all the storage space we had available to us.

With those tips, we were able to use our Hawthorne Self Storage unit to the fullest, and everything we didn't immediately need went into the storage unit. It was a hassle to pack up the kids' essentials – including all the extra stuff that a six month old baby needs! – and our own essentials to take to the hotel where we'd be staying for a few weeks, but in the end, it wasn't so bad.

Luckily, we had a couple of days to get out of the house, and some friends came over on the weekend to help us haul things over to storage. It was really easy to get items into the storage unit we rented, and we were done in no time with everyone who was helping out. The Hawthorne Storage unit was clean when we got there, which made me feel better, and it had lighting, which was great since we ended up still packing in a few boxes after dark.

Now, we're in the process of moving into our new house. One advantage of having rented a US Storage Centers Manhattan Beach Self Storage unit is that now we don't have to be in a rush to move all of our things back into the house. My husband stops by the storage unit on his way home from work to pick up a few boxes each day, and we unpack them as we go.

One thing that we kind of regret, though, is not paying attention to how we would want to pull things out of the storage unit as we were putting them in. For instance, we had to kind of dig around to get our dining room table and chairs and our couch out of storage when we first moved into the new house. If we had it to do over again, those important things would be right at the front of our Hawthorne Self Storage unit so we could pull them out first thing.

At any rate, we have certainly learned that self storage is a great option when you're moving, and we'd be likely to use a US Storage Centers Hawthorne Self Storage unit all over again when we move, even if we aren't in such an in-between houses situation. It just seemed to make the moving process go so much more smoothly!
