Storage for My Apartment Gardening Supplies

Apartment gardening is all the rage in urban areas these days, and I definitely got on that train! I've always wanted to be a gardener, but having lived in apartments for my entire adult life, I thought it would never happen. Then, I found all sorts of great gardening ideas on Pinterest and online blogs made just for the urban gardener, and I figured out that I actually can have a garden of my own, even if I live in a one bedroom apartment!

So this spring, I set out to gather up gardening supplies and fertilizer and potting soil and pots and those packing crate things that you can turn into a vertical garden. I got everything together, and before I had even potted the first plant, the thought hit me – where was I going to keep all that stuff?

I mean, even the simplest type of real food-growing garden takes some gardening equipment and supplies! I didn't even have a small outdoor storage area like some apartments do. There was literally nowhere for me to keep these things unless I wanted to stash all my gardening stuff in my bedroom – which I did most certainly not!

So, I started searching out ideas for places to keep my gardening supplies. It's not even like I had that much, but even a few minor implements, a bag of compost, some mulch, and the potting soil I bought were taking up plenty of space in my apartment's tiny dining room. I actually even looked into larger apartments in the area to see what that would cost, since that would definitely give me more space for storing gardening supplies. But that was way out of my price range. Plus, I really hate moving!

Anyway, I finally got the idea to use a Lancaster Self Storage unit to keep all that stuff in when I wasn't actually using it. I looked at a few different self storage locations in Lancaster and came across the US Storage Centers Lancaster Self Storage location on 10th. The location was perfect, relative to my typical stomping grounds, and it had lots of other stuff going for it, as well.

For one thing, the Lancaster Self Storage location by US Storage Centers offered a very small closet-sized unit, which I thought would be perfect for what I needed. I didn't need a ton of space, and I wasn't willing to pay a fortune for space I didn't need. I mean, I'm not cheap. I don't mind paying for what I want and need. But I wasn't about to pay double for double the square footage if I didn't need or even want that much space in a storage unit!

Besides offering small units, which obviously kept the prices lower, the Lancaster Self Storage location had competitive prices to begin with. That meant that a small US Storage Centers Lancaster Self Storage unit on 10th was definitely within my budget – and definitely cheaper than the difference in my rent if I had decided to rent a larger apartment just to have space for my gardening stuff!

Storing Our Lawn Chemicals Away from the Kids

Last summer we had quite a scare when our toddler daughter got into the bag of fertilizer we thought we had placed safely out of her reach in the garage. Luckily, my husband got to her before she ate anything or did any real damage, but that incident really opened our eyes. Even though we had cabinets and shelves and things in our garage designed to help keep our kids out of the lawn and garden chemicals, we still couldn't be sure they wouldn't be able to get into those things when we had our backs turned!

Right then and there, we decided we were either going to get rid of the lawn and garden chemicals or find somewhere else to keep them. Getting rid of everything wasn't really an option for me because I like for our lawn and garden to look really nice, and sometimes it takes a good fertilizer or pesticide to make that happen. So, we started looking into other options for storing our lawn and garden chemicals – all the fertilizers and composts and pesticides and herbicides and whatnot – away from our home where our kids couldn't get into them.

That's when we came across the A-American US Storage Centers Lancaster Storage location. It was close to home, and it had a lot to offer us as far as a solution for our lawn and garden care supplies went.

My husband first found the US Storage Centers A-American Lancaster Storage location on his way home from work one day, when he drove by it. He suggested that maybe a self storage unit would be an acceptable way to get all those chemicals away from the home. I wasn't really sure about that, because I thought it would cost too much money, but why not check it out? So we did check it out, and we were really surprised at what we found about the Lancaster Storage location!

For one thing, the US Storage Centers A-American Lancaster Storage location has some very small unit sizes, which is fantastic. The units are just about the size of a closet, which means they're pretty much what we needed to store our lawn and garden stuff. On top of the already reasonable per-square-foot prices of the Lancaster Storage location, the small unit sizes made the whole self storage thing very, very affordable. They even had some great specials going on for new renters that saved us even more money up front!

Lancaster Self Storage - Running Furniture Resale Out of My Storage Unit

This is a great time to run a furniture resale business. Lots of people are looking for a bargain, and if you know how to buy furniture at really deep discounts, you can make money off selling it for what other people think is a good deal. I started reselling furniture and other things I find at garage sales about a year ago, and it's been a great way to make a part-time income. I couldn't do it without my US Storage Centers Lancaster Storage unit on 10th St. though!

What I'll do is go to garage sales around town to pick up furniture that is being sold for a really good discount. Once in a while, I'll clean the furniture up, but more often than not, it's already in good shape. The people who are selling it just want to get rid of it as soon as they can, so they put a really low price on it. Usually I can haggle them down even further to increase my own profit margin!

I'll take some good photos of the furniture and write up a description for the online classifieds on Craigslist and similar sites. Then, I'll load up the furniture in my truck and take it to my Lancaster Self Storage unit. I'll store it there until a potential buyer is ready to see the piece, and then I'll take them there to see it. I'm a great salesperson, so usually I can convince the first or second buyer to take the piece of furniture for a price that I've marked up by at least 50%! They're still getting a decent deal, and I'm making money!

One thing about this business is that you have to keep the merchandise in good shape. That means following the best furniture storage tips in the business. Here are the things I do to make sure my furniture stays in tip-top shape in my Lancaster Self Storage unit:

  • Lay down pallets: Even the most watertight units, like my Lancaster Storage unit, can have some water problems at times. Sometimes it happens when there's a lot of rain and water gets in under the door, or sometimes it happens when the weather chances rapidly and the concrete floor of a unit gets sweaty. Either way, it's safer to pack everything on top of wooden shipping pallets that keep furniture off the floor and away from potential water damage.
  • Use cloth, not plastic: Most people think of rooms swathed in plastic when they think about storing furniture in a storage unit, but this is not a good idea. If furniture is in plastic for too long, it can cause mold to grow, and if the furniture can't breathe, it will probably at least get smelly – especially cloth and wooden furniture. That's why I keep a bunch of soft drop cloths and moving blankets around so I can drape and wrap furniture in material that breathes and lets air flow in.

Lancaster - Storing Furniture During Our Remodeling Project

Deciding to remodel our kitchen and dining area was a long time coming for us, but when we finally decided to do it, we were ready to go at it. We hired an architect to lay out the plans and then had a contractor hired within a week. We were ready to go, but we had to clear out our furniture first. A friend had used the A-American US Storage Centers Lancaster Self Storage location before and suggested that it would be a great option for us to use, too.

So we checked it out. We decided right away that it was a great option. The Lancaster Self Storage location had great security, and we could get into our unit whenever we needed to. Plus, the manager was great and helpful, and even gave us an awesome list of furniture storage tips to ensure that our furniture would be in tip top shape when we got it out of storage after our remodel.

Here are the furniture storage tips we used to help keep our dining room furniture in good shape while it was in storage:

  • Use pallets: Even though our Lancaster Self Storage unit is as water tight as they come, I guess you can still have problems in all storage units with the concrete floors sweating, and of course you want to make sure that you've protected your furniture against any possible leaks. The best way to do that is by putting down wooden packing pallets on the floor before you put your furniture in. They allow for air flow below the furniture and keep it off the water if any should puddle on the floor.
  • Use cloth, not plastic: The manager said it's okay to use plastic bags specifically made for storing mattresses and stuff, but we'd want to protect our dining room set with breathable cloth instead of plastic. Wooden furniture is already prone to mold, and plastic coverings can lock moisture next to the furniture, causing it to become moldy. We just draped cloths over our furniture to protect it from dust and to keep the pieces from rubbing up against each other when they were packed.
  • Stack it up: With dining room furniture, it's usually easy to stack the chairs a little, which is something you might not think about. Our chairs don't have arms so they easily stacked up tight against one another, which made it easier to store more chairs in less space. That actually took off enough floor space that we needed that we could afford a smaller unit than we had originally thought we would need which was definitely nice.

Lancaster, CA was noted by US News and World Report as one of the best places in the United States to retire, but it's also a great place to raise a family or to just work at your career. This city in the Antelope Valley is about seventy miles north of downtown Los Angeles, and it's the largest city on California's side of the Mojave Desert.  There are many different reasons that many people in Lancaster choose to use self storage, depending on their own circumstances.

Storing Our Homeschool Stuff

One thing that many people don't realize about homeschooling families is that you have to have a lot more stuff than regular families. I mean, if your kids are in public school or private school, think about how much stuff they have that just stays at school. All the books and educational games and learning materials and such. When you homeschool, you have to have all that stuff in your actual home! When you have four kids and a relatively small home, this can pose a bit of a problem. Where do you keep all that stuff? This is especially true if you're like me and you tend to buy your homeschool stuff ahead of time and use things for the younger kids that the older kids have already used!

Anyway, after a couple of years of trying desperately to find room in our home for the homeschool stuff we weren't currently using at the time, we finally came up with the idea of getting a Lancaster Self Storage unit for our extra stuff. The Lancaster Storage unit would be a place where we could put the hand-me-downs from the older kids until the younger kids were ready for them. It would also be a good place for me to store the items I'd bought ahead of time that the older kids weren't ready for yet, and it would be a great place to put seasonal items that we only pulled out once a year.

Of course, we needed to find a Lancaster Self Storage unit that was the right size, that was closet to home, and that was affordable. We looked around, and we finally found US Storage Centers Lancaster Self Storage, which was the perfect solution for our homeschool family. It offered small closet-sized units that were just the right size for a set of shelves that would help us organize all our stored homeschool gear, and they were very affordable.

In fact, the low price of the Lancaster Self Storage unit kind of surprised me. I wasn't willing to pay too much, but I didn't know you could get storage units for as little as US Storage Centers Lancaster Self Storage was asking at the time. The low price definitely sweetened the deal! Plus, they offered good discounts for the first couple of months, and we even found out about some long-term storage discounts, which were great since we planned on using a storage unit for our homeschool gear until our kids were ready to stop homeschooling!

Once we rented our Lancaster Self Storage unit, we put a shelving unit in there so it would be easier to find our homeschooling stuff. I had things separated by grade level, and an extra shelf for seasonal stuff that we used every year. Our Lancaster Self Storage unit was about the size of a walk-in closet. It was packed full by the time we got everything in there, but there was enough room to store everything we needed to store.

Storing My Stuff During the Summers

I don't live too far from Lancaster, CA when school is out, but it's still annoying to haul all my stuff home from the Lancaster University Center when classes let out during the summer. I mean, a dorm room isn't very big, but you'd be amazed how much stuff you can pack into one! Putting my entire dorm room into my car and hauling it home for the summer is not my idea of a good time. That's why I use a Lancaster Storage unit at a place called US Storage Centers to keep my college stuff in during the summers.

I mean, most of the stuff I use in my dorm room I don't need during the summers, anyway. I have dishes, a microwave, and a coffee pot, and my parents have all those things in the kitchen at home. I keep lots of my engineering books at school all year in case I need extra resources, but I don't need those things in the summer, either. Once I figured out just how few of my dorm room essentials I needed during the summer, I decided I was tired of hauling them home every year.

So last spring semester before it was time to go home, I checked out Lancaster Self Storage units around town. I was lucky to come across US Storage Centers. It had everything I needed in a self storage unit, and the price was just right.

When I was checking out Lancaster Self Storage, I wanted to be able to put my stuff somewhere close, and the US Storage Centers Lancaster Self Storage center was close enough to my college apartment. It wouldn't have to haul my stuff too far, which was nice since I'd have to make multiple trips to get it all into the storage unit.

Plus, the US Storage Centers Lancaster Self Storage location was one of the cleanest looking places in town. The manager explained that they rarely had break ins because they were so well-lit, and there were cameras everywhere. Even if they did have break ins, though, they would know about it because all the units were individually alarmed. I didn't have anything incredibly valuable to put in my Lancaster Self Storage unit, but it still would have been frustrating if I had come back to school to find that a bunch of my stuff had been swiped!

Of course, as a poor college kid, price was definitely a big factor in the storage unit I would choose. One of the great things about US Storage Centers Lancaster Self Storage was that they offered a good discount for the first couple of months of rental. Since their prices are already pretty low, that made it a great deal. Plus, they have pretty small storage units. I didn't need a lot of space, and I didn't want to pay for space I didn't need. The smallest unit at the US Storage Centers was perfect for me, and it didn't cost much at all.

Storing My Hiking Gear

As a hiking enthusiast, Lancaster, CA is the perfect place for me to live. Hiking in the desert is great, and hiking in the mountains is even better. The problem with hiking, though, is that it takes so much gear. Plus, hiking in the desert takes different gear than hiking in the mountains. Over the years, I've built up quite a supply of hiking gear, including different backpacks, walking poles, water purifiers, and cooking gear. At first, it wasn't a problem to stick this hiking gear into my closet, but now, there's just too much of it to do that! That's why I use Lancaster Storage at a place called US Storage Centers.

I first decided to look around to find Lancaster Self Storage when my hiking gear overflowed my bedroom closet and ended up stashed behind furniture in the living room. I'm not a neat freak by any means, but the cluttered nature of all that was even driving me crazy! I didn't want to move into a bigger place – nor could I really afford to. Plus, it seemed silly to think about moving just to have a place to put my stuff for hiking!

That's when a friend told me about US Storage Centers Lancaster Self Storage. She said she'd been using it to store her kids' off season clothes for a couple of years, and she couldn’t stop talking about how great it was. She said it was affordable and secure, and it was a great way to get just a little bit of extra space without having to pay too much for it.

So, I decided to check them out. I really liked what I found. For one thing, the Lancaster Self Storage unit came with some very small, closet-sized storage units. They were bigger than my closet at home, but not huge. Really, it was just the perfect size for storing all my hiking gear in them. Plus, I would be able to stack stuff all the way to the ceiling in the storage unit, which I couldn't do in my closet at home. That would give me plenty of room to store everything I needed to store, and I'd only be renting the smallest unit they had available.

An Extra Garage for My Fun Car

My whole life, I've dreamed about being able to drive a classic car one day. Of course, you don't drive a classic car to your job or anything, so it's just never been practical. But last year, my wife surprised me and said I could finally get the toy I'd been dreaming of! I was so excited, and I found just the perfect car. It's gorgeous.

The problem was that we didn't really have anywhere to put the car when I wasn't driving it. I mean, it could have sat in our own garage, but that would mean one of us giving up our garage space. Neither of us wanted to give up the convenience of being able to park in the garage throughout the year, so we weren't very keen on that idea. A friend who was also into classic cars suggested that we look into Lancaster Storage as a way to get an extra garage without building an extra garage!

So, we looked around at different storage locations. Obviously since we needed long-term storage, we needed an affordable storage option. We also needed it to be as secure as possible, as we'd spent a great deal of money on the car itself! Besides that, we were looking for a place that wasn't too far from home. What was the point of having a fun car if you couldn't get to it to take it out on the road every weekend?

We looked at a couple of different storage locations, but we found US Storage Centers Lancaster Self Storage, and it was the perfect option. They had everything we were looking for, including affordability and security.

One of the cool things about the Lancaster Self Storage location was that we would get a discount for the first couple of months of rental. Plus, they offered long-term storage discounts that would let us save if we signed a longer lease contract. Since we were planning on using the storage unit for a long time, this was definitely a good solution for us. Also, it was convenient that we would be able to pay for our Lancaster Self Storage unit online or have automatic payments debited from our account. That made it so much easier to get the payments done without having to worry about possibly missing one on a certain month.

Another thing we loved about Lancaster Self Storage by US Storage Centers was the security. They have a gate with a key pad, and you have to punch in your personal code to get through the gate. Once you punch in your code, it turns off the individual alarm on your unit. But if someone opens your unit without punching in your code first, an alarm will go off, alerting the on-site manager that there is a problem with your unit. That type of security is just what we were looking for in order to store my classic car!

A Place to Keep My Business Files

Running a small local law firm, you end up with a ton of paperwork. And I mean a TON of paperwork! I'm a one-man operation – just me and my part-time secretary – and I don't have a large office. I just work out of a small office with a reception area, and unless I want my office to be overly crowded, there's only enough room in it for a couple of file cabinets. Those cabinets are prioritized for clients I'm working for at the moment, so figuring out where to put old files can be a big problem.

For a while when I was starting out, I'd take older files home and put them in file cabinets in my own spare room. But that didn't work so well after the spare room became a nursery! My wife got sick of trying to find a place for all those extra file cabinets. Enough was enough, so she made me look into Lancaster Storage.

I thought that a Lancaster Self Storage unit could be a pretty good idea, since it would give me a place to store all those files without having to get a bigger office or build an extra room on my house. However, I needed a few things out of self storage, and I had to find the perfect place to keep all those files.

For one thing, the Lancaster Self Storage unit I chose had to be secure – as secure as, if not more secure than, my own office. It's not like I deal with Supreme Court cases or anything, but, still, I am a lawyer and my business files do contain personal information for my clients. I wanted to protect their information as well as I would my own.

Also, though, I couldn't afford to pay too much for my Lancaster Self Storage unit. People have this idea that all lawyers are rolling in dough, and that's just not the way it really works. I, like many other small layers, only bring in enough to support my family in a fairly comfortable living. I couldn't afford another huge business expense like renting a really expensive storage unit.

Storing Baby Stuff in Lancaster

eBay for Baby Clothes

I've always been an eBay shopper since the whole thing started. I mean, who doesn't like to look for great deals online? Plus, it's fun to shop at auctions, and it's more exciting to win an auction than it is to just buy an item for a flat price from another online store. When I had kids, my eBay shopping skills definitely came in handy. Did you know you can buy entire lots of baby clothes on eBay for next to nothing? It's way more efficient than shopping at garage sales, and I like it better, anyway. Luckily, though, I have a Lancaster Self Storage unit through a place called US Storage Centers to contain all my eBay finds!

Like I said, I've been shopping on eBay for years. Lots of times, it's where I'll get decorative items for my home, new clothes for me, and even gifts for friends and family members. When I had kids, though, I didn't think about using eBay at first. I didn't know anyone else who habitually bought used clothes for their kids, so I thought it just wasn't done. That was until I went on my first baby clothes shopping trip. That stuff is expensive! As soon as I got home, I knew it was time to find another solution for baby clothes. I got my own clothes on a steep discount through eBay, so why couldn't I learn to buy baby clothes online, too?

I immediately went to check out my options with eBay. One thing I found was that you can get tons of different options from high-end resale shops who sell clothes in lots. From my own experience, I knew it was cheaper to buy clothes in lots, so that's what I started doing. Buying baby clothes mostly sight unseen except for a couple of online photos was weird at first. It led to ending up with a few items I hated or that were too stained to allow my kid to wear, but, eventually, I got better at picking out the cream of the crop and still saving money on my baby's clothes.

The problem I had right away was that I found I would have to shop ahead of the game in order to stock up on the clothing sizes my baby would need in the future. Otherwise, I risked having her grow out of one size seemingly overnight and having to go naked until I could find a couple of new bags of clothing from eBay! Yikes!

The issue with shopping ahead, of course, is that you have to have a place to keep all the stuff you buy. I didn't really have room in my overly-packed garage, so I decided to check out Lancaster Self Storage units. That's when I came across the US Storage Centers Lancaster Self Storage location. It was neat and well-lit, and I knew I wouldn't have to deal with problems like water damage or thievery in a location like that!

Keeping Our Beach Stuff Out of the Way

In our family, going to the beach is a big event all summer long. In Lancaster, we're about an hour and a half from our favorite beach, but, seriously, what's three hours in the car compared with an entire day at the beach enjoying the sun and the Pacific waves? Nothing! Unfortunately, as we've added on to our family, we've also had to add on to our beach gear. When it was just my husband and I, we had a couple of beach towels and a cooler. Now with all the kids, though, we actually need an entire Lancaster Self Storage unit just to contain our beach gear when we aren't using it. Otherwise, it would overrun our entire home!

Now, when I say "entire" Lancaster Self Storage unit, you might get the idea that we go a little overboard for the beach. Maybe we do, but, really, we only have a small storage unit, which is very inexpensive for us in the long run. But, we really do have a lot of beach gear. For instance, we have a large beach tent that's essential for keeping the kids out of the sun sometimes while they're playing in the sand. We also have a baby beach tent for the little ones to take naps in, beach toys for the kids, a couple of bodyboards, some volleyballs and beach balls, and not one but two huge coolers. When you have to feed a big family for an entire day at the beach, you need a ton of cooler space – trust me on this one!

So, as we started adding beach going gear to our list of stuff that we carried to the beach practically every weekend, it started really taking over our garage space. When we were no longer able to park the car in the garage without hitting a beach tent or chair, we decided it was time for a solution – a Lancaster Self Storage unit.

So, I shopped around for different Lancaster Self Storage locations and came across one called US Storage Centers. This particular location was close to home, had great prices, and, best of all, had clean, neat storage units with good security. With this type of storage unit, we would be able to access our unit pretty much whenever we wanted, which was great since sometimes we'd go to the beach at the absolute last minute. The cost of this particular Lancaster Self Storage unit wasn't too bad, either.

We probably could have made do with a closet-sized 5x5 Lancaster Self Storage unit, but we actually decided to go ahead and get a 10 x 10 unit. It made it easier to organize our beach going stuff, and, plus, we ended up using it for other odds and ends around the house that we needed to keep but didn't need all the time. It was so nice to clean out the closets and attic and garage and move a bunch of stuff to our storage unit!

Storing My Christmas Secrets

In my family, keeping a secret is next to impossible. I made the unfortunate mistake of telling my kids when they were young how I would always ferret out my parents' hiding place for my Christmas presents, unwrap them to see what they were, and wrap them again before anyone knew the difference. Well, that led to a competition of sorts to see which of my kids could find out first what they were getting for Christmas. It wasn't until I found my Lancaster Self Storage unit that I was able to keep any secrets from them at all!

See, I was talking to my girlfriend about this problem one day. It doesn't really make me mad that my kids always know what they're getting for the holidays, but it does make me want to outsmart them. They're teenagers now, so we can get a little competitive just for fun! My friend suggested I find somewhere outside my own home to hide the kids' Christmas gifts. I'd already tried hiding them at the neighbors' and at my own parents' house, but they still managed to figure things out!

Well, my friend had recently rented a storage unit at a Lancaster Self Storage location called US Storage Centers. She was just putting away a few odds and ends that she didn't have room for in her home but wasn't ready to get rid of. She talked about how a closet-sized 5x5 unit was really ridiculously affordable, especially with the specials they're always running at this Lancaster Self Storage place.

The idea intrigued me, so I gave the US Storage Centers Lancaster Self Storage location a call the next day. I just wanted to price out some units, and I was also surprised at how affordable they were. Plus, it was month-to-month storage, so I could just rent a unit for a few months – from when I started Christmas shopping in October until the end of December, when I could clean out the unit and walk away. What was a bit of money for three months' worth of storage compared to knowing that my kids would never find their Christmas presents?

Lancaster Storage

The garage can be a shrine to men and women in homes around the world, and Lancaster garages are no different. Your garage can be the one place on your property that is separated from your actual house, and doesn’t need to be proper and organized the same way that your kitchen or living room are. It can be your sanctuary and your place to be yourself, and it can be the exact thing to change the way that you unwind, relax or entertain people. In its current state, however, your garage probably is not ready to become this. It can make that transformation, though, when you use a Lancaster self storage location, and find a Lancaster self storage unit that fits your needs.

With a Lancaster self storage unit, you will be able to remove all of the junk from your garage that you don’t need there – and don’t even particularly need anywhere on your property. With all of the inessentials moved from your garage to your Lancaster self storage unit, you will have room in your garage like you never imagined available. Once you have this room free to you, you will be able to step into your garage, take a breath, and realize all of the room in your garage that you likely have never noticed before.

Your Lancaster self storage unit can do all of this for you, and any Lancaster self storage room will be fitted to hold all of your items from your garage.
