Plantation Self Storage

Plantation, Florida is located in Broward County and encompasses 22.8 square miles of which 0.19 square miles of which is water.  Plantation is the 6th largest city in Broward County. This city was initially formed in 1949 as a suburb of Fort Lauderdale and incorporated in 1953. 

This city is located 8 miles west of Fort Lauderdale, Lauderhill to the northeast, Sunrise to the northwest, and Davie to the south. The City of Miami is located 33 miles to the south of Plantation and 15 minutes from Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport.  The City of Plantation is bordered by S.R. 7, Sunrise Boulevard, Flamingo Road, and I-595.

Plantation has been recognized for the last 28 consecutive years as “Tree City USA” and one of the few cities in the country to be designated a “Sterling Tree City USA”.  This city is known for safe, friendly neighborhoods, world-class recreation facilities, and a stable business community.

Thanks to the mild year weather, people can participate in the sport of their choice year round.
This city has 37 parks and playgrounds, tennis courts, golf courses, and lakes for boating and fishing.   With the wide variety of sports in available in the area, these residents are likely to be looking for storage units to keep their sporting equipment.

The 2009 population of Plantation was 84,892 people.  The population of Plantation increased 2.4% from 2000 to 2009. The estimated median household income in 2009 was $58,785. The median age of Piscataway residents is 37.9 years. The cost of a home in Plantation ranges from $70,000 to over $1 million.  The median gross rent in 2009 was $1,268.

The population density for this city is considered average with 3,905 people per square mile. The racial demographic breakdown of Plantation (2009) indicated the following – 50% White, 19.6% Hispanic, 17.4% African American, and 3.2% Asian.

Top employers in this area include American Express, Motorola, Florida Power and Light, Plantation General Hospital, and Westside Regional Medical Center were located in Plantation.   Today Plantation is also home to DH’s World Headquarters for the Americas, Avianca S.A. sales office, American InterContinental University (AIU), and the Esparanto Language Institute.  Tourism is also a lucrative industry for this city.  Plantation is home to several shopping centers including Plaza Shopping Center, Plantation Village Shopping Center, West Broward Shopping Center, and Westgate Shopping Center.   In addition to these shopping centers there are numerous shopping centers in the area. These malls and shopping centers house numerous retail stores that are likely to be in need of secure storage space for their excess products.

Plantation is home to one college the University of Phoenix-Fort Lauderdale; however, there are several colleges and universities of over a student body of over 2000 within 20 miles of Plantation.  These colleges and universities include – Nova Southeastern University, Keiser College, Broward Community College, Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, and Barry University.  Many students attending these colleges may seek better accommodations that what are available close to the university and choose to rent an apartment in Plantation.

Plantation is home to a highly educated workforce with the percentage of the population with a bachelor’s degree or higher above average for the State of Florida.

As you can see from the statistics listed above, the population of Plantation has increased by 2.4% in less than 10 years and will likely increase as in the future.  With new residents moving in and out of the area there will be a definite need for storage units for storing items during the relocation process.

Plantation has a significant retirement age community.  This city was named #59 on the list of "Top 100 cities with oldest residents".  Individuals retiring to this area are likely to move into a smaller living space then where they resided prior to moving to Plantation.  Reasons for the downsizing may be due to the higher cost of living in Florida, the fact these individuals are older and do not wish to maintain a large home because their children have left home.  Whatever the reason, these relocated individuals will likely be in need of secure storage during the transition period.  These individuals may also be in need of secure storage beyond the transition period due to the not having room for personal items they wish to retain but do not have room for in smaller accommodations.

As with most Florida cities, there is a percentage of Plantation residents that live in the area only in winter months instead of spending the winter months in the northern states were the climate is colder.  These residents tend to be of retirement age and may live in an RV or rental property during the winter months.  These residents moving in and out of the area annually and are in need of secure storage facilities.
