Storing My Mother's Paperwork When I finally had to move my eighty year old mother into assisted living care, I had no idea, really, how involved the whole process would be. They tell you about Baby Boomers having to care for their parents and their kids at the same time, but they don't really mention most of the time how involved the process of caring for your parents can be. While I could pretty much get mother's home sorted out and her things sold or given away, it was the paperwork that I had trouble with. What did I need to keep, and what did I need to give away? Much of the paperwork I found around the house was financial, including old tax returns. I'll say this for my mother: she never threw away anything that needed keeping. Actually, she never threw away anything, so she just happened to end up keeping some things that were worth keeping! Some of the paperwork helped me figure out my mother's financial situation and how things were allocated. Some of it I just wasn't sure what to do with. So I consulted with a friend who works in the world of personal finances, and he helped me go through some of the paperwork to decide what to keep. Once we had filled up an entire file cabinet full of medical, legal, and financial paperwork that I would need to keep for years to come, I was baffled as to what to do with it. I didn't have room for a filing cabinet in my home. I barely had room to keep my own paperwork, let alone that of my mother! Luckily, my friend had dealt with plenty of paperwork in his time as a financial advisor, and he suggested that I check out US Storage Centers Plantation Self Storage. The location, he said, would be close to home for me, and the Plantation Self Storage location usually had some good deals on smaller units that would be perfect for a file cabinet or two. So the next day I decided to head down to the US Storage Centers Plantation Self Storage location to see what they had to offer. I went on my friend's directions and was immediately impressed with the quality of the location. Everything was clean and neat. I mean, it's a self storage center, so it's nothing amazing to look at, but it's much more well-kept than most self storage centers I'd been exposed to! |

Plantation – Storing My Furniture During a Temporary Move When most people move, they expect to be in their new location for at least a few years. That's how I thought it would play out for me, too, until I was asked to take a temporary position for one of the branches of my company in Kentucky. It was quite a ways away from my home in Plantation, but I was willing to take the job for a few reasons. For one thing, it would give me a great boost in my career, and for another it would just be a fun adventure! So, I accepted the six month assignment, and prepared to end the lease on my apartment and move out for a few months. During the contract, I'd live in a long-term hotel provided by my business, but I would have to pay for the moving and storage of anything I needed to get out of my current apartment. Since I was ending the lease , I decided to just move all the furniture I wouldn't be taking with me into storage so that I'd have a good place to keep it during my short term assignment. I spent some time looking around town to find different Plantation Self Storage options before I decided to opt for US Storage Centers Plantation Self Storage. The location was perfect because it was right in the area where I was living and where I'd probably live again when I moved back to Plantation. Plus, the price was definitely right. With specials for the first couple months' worth of rent and already low prices, the Plantation Self Storage location was a great option for me because it would help me save money on my furniture storage for that period of time. One of the best things about the Plantation Self Storage location, too, was the customer service. I mean, the manager really took time to talk with me about what I was putting in storage, and she helped me find the perfect size unit for my needs. While lots of other places would have just tried to upsell me so I would spend more money, the US Storage Centers manager was really just interested in helping me find the perfect unit for my needs. Something that came out of this great conversation – besides just the perfect storage unit for my furniture – was several tips on how to store furniture properly so that it would still be in good shape when I got it out of storage. Here are a few of the best tips the manager of the Plantation Self Storage location gave me: Store things on end: This doesn't really have to do with making sure furniture will be in good condition, but it did save me from getting a larger than necessary self storage unit. Storing couches and mattresses on end saves a ton of floor space, and it doesn't hurt the furniture at all. |
