Baltimore, Maryland is the largest city in the State of Maryland.  This city encompasses 92.06 sq. miles of which 11.108 sq miles are water.  This city is located in the north-central part of the state on the Patapsco River near where it empties into the Chesapeake Bay.

The residents of Baltimore experience the 4 seasons with summers reaching over 80F and winters dropping to 25F or lower.  July is typically the hottest month of the year and January is the coldest month. The average snowfall is 20.6 inches. 

Baltimore can be easily accessed by several interstates such as I-70, I-395, I-83 (the Jones Falls Expressway), I-95 (the John F. Kennedy Memorial  Parkway), I-694 (the Baltimore Beltway), I-795 (the Northwest Expressway), and I-895 (the Harbor Tunnel Thruway).  Baltimore is also served by Amtrack. Baltimore’s Penn Station is one of the busiest in the country with statistics showing more than a million people using this means of transportation in 2008.    

The 2009 population of Baltimore was 637,418.  The estimated median household income in 2009 was $38,772. The median age of Baltimore residents is 35.0 years. The estimated median house or condo value in 2009 was $168,400. The gross median rent (2009) was $887.

The population density of Baltimore is high with 7,888 people per square mile. The racial demographic breakdown for Baltimore (2009) showed 62.1% African American, 30.7% White, 3.0% Hispanic, and 1.9% Asian. 

Baltimore primarily used to be the home to many manufacturing companies that consisted of steel processing and auto manufacturing, but now instead is the home to more service-oriented businesses.  The largest employers in Baltimore are John Hopkins University and John Hopkins Hospital.

Baltimore proper and surrounding suburbs is the homes to 5 Fortune 1000 companies – Constellation Energy, Grace Chemicals, Legg Mason, T. Rowe Price, and McCormick & Company.  Other major employers in the area include AAI Corporation, Adams Express Company, Brown Advisory, FTI Consulting, Vertis, Prometric, Petroleum & Resources Corporation, Sylvan Learning, Laureate Education, Under Armour, DAP, DeBaufre Bakeries, Wm T. Burnett & Company, Old Mutual Financial Network, Firaxis Games, Sinclair Broadcasting Group, Fila USA, JoS. A. Bank Clothiers and American Sugar Refining.  As mentioned above John Hopkins University is located in Baltimore.  Along with John Hopkins University and college there is a biotechnology park in this area.

As you can see construction is a major industry in this ever growing, ever changing city. Construction companies often tend to be in need of storage buildings near construction sites to store excess material and/or equipment.

As with all cities that are homes to institutes of higher education, there is a need for secure storage for students that are not attending John Hopkins University during the summer months and prefer to store their personal belongings rather than haul them home and back again when they resume classes – this is especially true if the student’s home town is a great distance away.  Since John Hopkins University is a world-renounced medical intuition, this University is attended by individuals from around the world.

With both the John Hopkins Hospital and the biotechnology park located in the area, this area is a major draw for professionals working in these fields and relocating to Baltimore to work at these facilities and then taking their to another location which translates into a significant number of people moving in and out of the area.  It is a proven fact that people take advantage of personal storage in the area when they are in the process of relocating.

There are several other public and private colleges in the Baltimore area including Baltimore International Collage, College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Loyola University Maryland, Maryland Institute College of Art, Sojourner-Douglass College, Baltimore City Community College, Coppin State University, Morgan State University, University of Baltimore, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore.  Again students attending these colleges and universities would greatly benefit from nearby personal storage to keep their belongings when they are not taking classes and must have all their items out of the dorms.

The Port of Baltimore is one of the major international seaports along the East Coast of the United States.  From this port millions of dollars worth of cargo containers and general cargo are imported and exported daily.  In 2009 more than 1.3 billion tons of cargo passed through this port.  Businesses importing and exporting items from the Port of Baltimore may be searching for secure storage for their items prior to shipping or upon receiving and would benefit from storage units in this area.

Baltimore is a busy city ever growing ever changing city with people continually moving in and out of the area either for employment or for education.   These individuals in this city would benefit from having nearby self storage facilities not to mention the residents that are in need of storage units because they do not have enough storage space in their homes.  And last but not least, a thriving cargo shipping industries with customers highly likely to be in need of storage solutions.
