Usually we don't find out something wasn't done right until we've done it, and then realized... it should have been done differently. While we're around, the same thing won't be said about your storage unit. *** Here are some tips to keep in mind BEFORE storing: *** Use a high quality lock, preferably a "disc lock”. They are much harder to break or cut, and that means keeping your valuables as safe as possible. Wipe all metal surfaces with an oily rag. Metal items like bicycles, lawnmowers and file cabinets, will rust over time if not well protected. Packing books on their sides, is a common mistake. Pack them flat to protect their spines. Large pieces of furniture should be placed vertically to save floor space. For even more space saving, store sofas, armchairs and love-seats at the back of the unit. Always place a protective waterproof cover over them. Leave small walkways between the boxes and the furniture in your storage unit, so you can easily get through and get to the items that you need, without having to move things around. NEVER keep anything flammable or combustible in your storage unit. WHOA!!! That means: gasoline, oil, cleaning fluids or paint thinners. They’re NOT safe! If you’re storing any pieces of machinery that run on gas, be sure to drain the tank before storing. Make an estimate of the replacement value of each item you’re storing. It will help with accurate insurance policies and in case of unexpected damage in the unit. Storing wet items can cause water damage, mold and mildew. Protect your stuff & don’t do it!! Don't pack items into sealed plastic bags. Humidity is not your friend, and neither is mildew. Drain washing machines before storing them, and tie down any loose hoses. Think about wiping the insides with baking soda before storing. Clean items have longevity. Tell us if this was informative!!
