When you are tucked neatly into the Los Angeles area, communities have a tendency of just melding together. You can pass through one suburb and never realize that you crossed a border. But that is especially the case with Covina, California, a plucky little suburb that truly escapes notice. How It Started Founded in 1882, the city was started on a tiny 2000-acre tract of land purchased by one of the many real estate folks who set up shop in this area of the country. An engineer named Frederick Eaton bought the land due its secluded location in a “cove” of the San Gabriel Mountains with the intention of turning it into a vineyard. When it was incorporated as a rural community in 1901, it encompassed a land area of only one square mile, making it (at the time) the smallest city in the country for land area. Covina certainly isn’t that small anymore. At the onset of World War II, the city expanded to support the new soldiers and sailors who were moving into the area by the millions. Today, it supports 47,796 as of the 2010 census, though the total area is still only seven square miles. A Cultural Hub Covina is a town that is filled with history and lots of things to do, making it an ideal family community. Not only are the streets near downtown lined with its famous grapefruit trees, Covina also lays claim to several other landmarks such as the busiest movie theater in the country, the AMC 30 on Azusa Avenue, as well as a completely restored old town featuring a 1911 firehouse and jail. There are many things to look forward to in this small suburb and you cannot go wrong with any other city in the whole of Los Angeles. We welcome you, outsider, and hope you enjoy our little hamlet.
