The last of the kids finally finished college - and moved into their new place! Finally, you can turn the last of their old bedroom into that craft room you always wanted! You just have to move the last of their stuff to the attic, right? But wait a second - why are you still holding this stuff for them? They have their own place, with their own closets, and you are certainly entitled to get rid of all the extra furniture and assorted items they have left behind. Here, you may ask them when they are going to come get their stuff, yet months pass and nothing happens. Then, you may tell them they need to come get this stuff the next weekend - and yet months pass again. What's a parent to do? If you really want to be able to proceed with that craft room, you may need to take a more proactive approach. Setting Deadlines The first step you may need to take is to set a deadline by which you require your children to come get their drum set or high school and college sports equipment. Make it reasonable, but not flexible. Let them know that anything that is still there after the deadline will be thrown away or put out on the curb for recycling or free pick-up by anyone who is interested. This deadline approach works better when your children have left something behind that they actually do still want - otherwise, you may find yourself muttering under your breath as you haul plastic trash bags of unwanted clothing and other items out to the trash or to the clothing collection boxes. Small Doses Another option to get rid of the kids' belongings may be to give it to them to take along each time they come to visit. Little by little you will get rid of the stuff if you insist they take it with them. This process may be too slow, though, and if transport issues exist (such as them not having a large enough vehicle to haul that piece of furniture they want to keep), it may slow down your progress. A New Storage Option If your grown child has left behind a lot of things, they may need more space than they want to devote to storing old items they cannot yet bear to get rid of. Suggesting a convenient storage facility where they can manage their own storage and decluttering projects may be a great solution. If you want to make the transition from your house to a public storage facility, offering to pay the rent for the first month or two for them may be worth it - particularly when you find a storage facility that offers great deals on first (and maybe even the second) month's rent.
