Welcome to the US Storage Centers family! As we store our items for the very first time, we instinctively think: pack boxes, mark them, place them neatly in the storage unit, roll the door, place the lock, et voila! But there are some things we left out. First off, you have to make sure you know if your valuables require climate control or not. Then, it's best to place wooden pallets on the floor, to elevate the boxes and avoid moisture absorption from the concrete. Fill each box completely, and place the heaviest items at the bottom, lighter ones on top. Label ALL boxes on all four sides, so you can easily identify what’s what. Don't stack them higher than shoulder height so you can remove them comfortably and reduce the risk of dropping one, or injuring yourself. Try packing your boxes as close together as possible, to avoid moisture from accumulating in between them. Keep an inventory of your stored items and keep it in a safe place, preferably at home or in a safe deposit box. You’ll always know what’s in your unit that way. Try leaving small walkways between the boxes and the furniture in your storage unit. It will be easier to make your way throughout and get any items you may need, without having to move things around and make a mess. Leave a small space between the wall of your unit and your items. Doing that, allows for better ventilation. Never pack anything wet, and don't pack items into sealed plastic bags wither. Humidity is not your friend, and neither is mildew. Use the furniture with drawers, as storage space for small items. You can wrap those items in tablecloths, towels or blankets, to prevent them from breaking. Make sure your refrigerator and freezer are thoroughly cleaned and dry when storing, and leave the doors slightly open to avoid bad smells. Wipe all metal surfaces like bicycles, lawnmowers and file cabinets with an oily rag. Over time, these items will rust if they're not well protected. Part deux coming soon.
