You and I both know how crucially helpful batteries can be! Remember that time when the power went out, and we needed those flashlights? How about changing the channel to that really important game that started 1 minute ago and the remote needs new battery juice? They come in different shapes and sizes, and storing them properly is very important. Proper storage will extend the life of the batteries and it will keep them from becoming a safety hazard. Not to mention, being able to easily find them when you need them... Here are 4 simple steps: #1. Keep the batteries in their original packaging. That packaging is perfectly sealed and will ensure that they remain protected from any environmental factors. I.e. humidity. #2. If no longer in their original packaging, store them with the positive and negative terminals away from each other. If they’re touching, they may conduct electricity, which will discharge them. You can also buy storage boxes designed especially for batteries, and that will eliminate this potential problem. You should also leave the plastic caps on the terminals if they came with it. Some batteries like many 9-volts, come with a plastic cap fitted over the terminals. You should leave those caps on, to prevent the batteries from conducting the electricity and losing charge. #3. Store the batteries in a dry, cool place that’s not subjected to extreme temperatures or humidity. This sort of conditions can damage the battery. Ideally, they should be stored at around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. If storing them in the fridge (which is typically done in order to extend their lifespan), make sure they are sealed in an airtight plastic bag or container, to maintain the right moisture level. No freezing please. #4. Avoid storing new and old batteries together. When they are near each other, you risk the new ones conducting electricity into the old ones, ultimately discharging them. Also mixing different types of batteries can cause leakage or rupture. Remember: Don’t keep batteries (especially small and coin cell ones) within reach of children!
