Furniture gets expensive. Bed, nightstands, dresser, couch... They can add up to a lot and for that reason, the last thing you want to have happen, is reopen those store unit rolling doors and realize that inappropriate storing has lead to permanent damage. Here are some tips to insure the safety and well being of your furniture: #1. Consider controlling the temperature within the unit. That's priceless. Ask one of our facility managers about climate control. This type of unit uses central air and heat to maintain the proper temperature within the unit that will help reduce humidity. #2. Disassemble any wooden furniture to reduce the likelihood of damage. Remove the table legs, remove headboards and footboards and store all the screws needed to reassemble in labeled bags or containers. Place chairs upside down on the tables that can't be disassembled. #3. Wax any wood furniture, or spray it with furniture-spray before storing it. Sheets are great to cover the furniture for safe keeping. Apply double layers of plastic sheets to furniture if the unit isn't climate-controlled. #4. Store mattresses and box springs flat and elevate them off of the floor. You could use pallets for that. #5. Clean fabric sofas, chairs and mattresses before storing, to help reduce the possibility of mold or mildew from forming. Make sure that they are entirely dry before placing them in the unit. #6. Polish any metal furnishings made from brass, silver or nickel. If you do that, you prevent oxidation. Wrap the items in plastic sheets to protect them from dust. #7. If you have leather furniture, make sure it's properly cleaned before placing it into storage. Make sure that the surfaces are fully dry, as any shred of moisture can cause mold and mildew which will severely damage your property. Additionally, set your furniture on top of wooden pallets. DO NOT cover it with plastic. It will encourage mildew. Use a thin layer of soft fabric over the furniture instead, like cotton or flannel. Don't place anything on top of the leather items, they will leave indentations over time. Was this helpful? If so, please share the love and 'LIKE' our Facebook page.
