For many folks, taxidermy is a true passion. With passion comes the imminent desire to keep your trophies safe from harm's way and properly stored, and it is for that reason that I wrote this blog. We got the request to post some tips about how to properly store taxidermy and didn’t wait another second. We’ve put together some tips that should absolutely be considered, and in doing so, they will help keep your prized possessions safely stored. For more tips and tricks, join us on our Facebook page :) #1. Consider the size. Think about the number of animals/crates you’ll need to place in the storage unit, their size and the size of the mounts. It’s typically best to get a unit slightly larger than your initial thoughts. Why? For 2 reasons: 1- You’ll leave a margin for any estimating errors and 2- you’ll have a little more room in case you need to store more and not have to pile anything on top of each other. #2. Take a look at the unit doors. Are they wide enough to fit any crates you might place the animals in? Plywood crates are typically the best way to store the animals, especially for an extended period of time. #3. Control the climate. Depending on where you are in the country, temperatures can fluctuate considerable and these fluctuations can cause the skin on the animals to expand and contract until it inevitably begins to crack. #4. After placing the animals in the crates, seal the edges of the crates with a silicon product, to avoid any pests from sneaking inside. #5. Elevate the crates off the floor, using pallets. Doing that, will help moisture from forming and getting into the crate. Moisture causes mold and mildew which can permanently damage your items. If this helped, let us know.
