As we get older, we tend to graduate to bigger and better things in all areas of our lives - bigger and better vehicles, homes, even furnishings. But what can we do with the outgrown items? Some of these unwanted belongings we can easily sell - but in other cases, we would probably not easily find someone who wants to buy used items. One item that we typically do not end up selling, but perhaps saving for other family members who may need it in the future, is a mattress. When a mattress is still in good shape, it may make sense to keep it instead of selling it. Whether your kid moves home after college instead of getting his or her own place, or you decide to turn the spare bedroom into a guest room for out-of-town visitors, you may want to hold on to that mattress in the event that you need it. Keep It Clean Chances are, if you have an extra mattress, you are going to want to find a good place to keep it so that it is protected and ready for its next use. Keeping a mattress in a storage unit makes the most sense - it is certainly something that takes up more than just a little room and you likely will not need to access it often or without at least some notice. So, is it okay to just throw it in the storage unit? Probably not, if you want to keep it in the best condition possible. One of the most important things to do is to put it into some type of bag or covering. Protecting against moisture, dust, dirt, and whatever else may be a concern is easily accomplished with a mattress storage bag. Be sure that the mattress is thoroughly cleaned and dried before placing it in the mattress bag, however, as you do not want to take a chance that it will be sitting in dirt or getting moldy because it is sealed inside a bag while still damp. The smell alone from that would likely prevent its future use. Horizontal Is Best The best way to store a mattress is to have it lie flat instead of on its edge - this protects the integrity of the mattress by preventing the coils and insides of your mattress from shifting and sagging. While it may not be practical to use up all of your storage unit's floor space by laying the mattress directly on the floor, it may make sense to lay the mattress on top of the stacks of boxes you have inside your unit. Whatever you do, do not pile boxes or other items on top of the mattress, as this can not only create a hazardous and unsteady situation, but it can also damage the mattress by cutting into it or creating permanent dents.
