Not too long ago, we talked about How To Properly Move A Piano. If you haven’t seen the 10 steps, you’re missing out, so click here. Now that you know the dos and don’ts of moving it, let’s go over how to suitably store it. Please join us on Facebook for more :) #1. The most important thing to keep in mind when storing your piano is the temperature. Any sudden cooling or sudden heating will harm your musical instrument, so when it boils down to it, a climate controlled unit is a must. These sort of units maintain a constant temperature inside the storage unit through the use of #2. Choose an suitable storage space. The piano must be kept dry and generally cool, so you must avoid placing it in damp, moist, or humid areas. If you do, the piano will start deteriorating rapidly. #3. Also make sure that the unit is large enough to store the piano upright on its legs. Never store a piano on its side. #4. Clean the piano before placing it in storage. Give it a good wipe down to remove any traces of dust and give it a good polish. Wipe the keys with a slight damp cloth (never with the same polish). #5. Dust is not a piano’s friend. By a long shot. And to protect it from dust, you should fully cover it with a cotton sheet. Never use plastic or other non-breathing materials, as they will allow for humidity to form, which in turn will cause potential irreparable damage. #6. Check on the piano often. If you see signs of any damage, you can get those treated immediately rather than allowing complete damage to happen. #7. Once you move the piano out of storage and back into your home, allow the piano to “sit” for at least one month before tuning it, to allow all the mechanics to adjust to the new environment.
