Your recreational vehicle (RV) is a major investment, just like your vehicle or house. In order to get plenty of years – or decades – of reliable use and service from your RV, you have to take the time – and spend the money – to protect your investment. To do this, there are actions that you need to take, and one of those involves properly storing your RV. Even Florida living requires some down-time during the year. Unless you plan to take any road trips during the winter months, you probably plan to store your RV somewhere. Some people have space in their yards or driveways, but for those who don’t, a Tampa storage is typically the best place to park it. Before you take it to the storage lot, though, you want to properly prepare your RV to be stored for a long period of time. While there are plenty of RV storage issues that could be discussed, let’s talk about the important points today: Interior Prep Clean and defrost the fridge and freezer. Prop the doors open and to absorb any odors, place containers of baking soda in each compartment. If you are storing your RV for a long period of time, go to the distribution panel and turn the main breaker off. At the LP tank, you can turn off the LP gas valve. Clean the air conditioner filters. Close any blinds or curtains in the windows to protect the interior from sun damage. Leave all of the cabinets, drawers, and doors open. Remove batteries from flashlights and alarm clocks. Leave vents cracked open to allow ventilation. Exterior Prep One of the things you have to worry about when storing your RV outside is the constant exposure to the outdoor weather and the wear and tear the elements can cause. Sun can cause damage by aging your RV faster and the ozone that is in our air can cause your RV’s paint to fade, as well as deteriorate, crack, and dry out any vinyl and rubber. If you wax the exterior of your RV, it will give it a good protective coating. Inspect the entire exterior for any cracks or gaps that would allow water in. Re-seal any issues you find with an appropriate sealant. If you are not sure what to use, you can ask your dealer. Clean any awnings properly and allow them to dry completely before you pack them away. If you plan to store your RV outside on pavement, you may want to invest in a cover. Tires Sun can damage tires just like it damages your RV exterior, so inflate the tires to the recommended pressure according to the manufacturer and cover them with covers that block out UV rays. If you are parking your RV on a surface that is petroleum-based or one that can freeze, place something between the tires and the ground. Be sure that the tire is not hanging over the edge if you are using a block, or the tire can be damaged.
