You went on Google, found a couple of potential facilities and even did some preliminary research. But is that enough? That facility you choose will house your items. Your valuables, clothing that you love, photographic memories and so forth, so that storage facility better be the right one! If you can, you should visit the facility and take a tour of the units. Here’s what you should look out for as you do the tour: ☐ Are the grounds properly manicured? ☐ Is the inside of the facility clean and well taken care of? ☐ Are the inside and outside areas well lit? ☐ Is the staff professional and courteous? Were they able to answer all your questions satisfactorily? ☐ Make sure they have sufficient security on the premises. ☐ Either if you’re taking a tour or not, there are some must-ask questions you should get out of the way and use as your deciding factor. Here’s what you should ask: ☐ What kind of security system do you have? ☐ Do you have working smoke alarms in each building along with a sprinkler system in case of fire? ☐ When can I access the storage unit and how? Does the facility allow for 24/7 access to the unit, or only during certain times? ☐ Is my access limited in any way? A simple question that gets overlooked. This is something that you should know about, to avoid surprises. ☐ What is your vacancy rate? That typically says something about that facility. If the vacancy is relatively high, ask them why. ☐ Do you have climate controlled units? Very important to know if you have items sensitive to moisture. ☐ Have you had any break-ins and if so, how did they occur? Another thing you should look out for, are the discounts on moving trucks.
