Last fall, Kure It’s annual campaign, Rivals United for a Kure, united the UCLA and USC sports communities together in the quest to fund cancer research. The second campaign of its kind was a huge success, raising $280,000 for innovative research at UCLA Jonsson and USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Centers. Kure It is proud to announce the recipients of the 2014 Donahue Robinson Rivals United Grants. UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center Dr. Arun S. Singh & Dr. Dennis J. Slamon work together to target molecular altercation in the FGFR pathway in liposarcoma. Seeking to enhance understanding and characterization of FGFR’s signaling in liposarcomas to help design targeted approaches for the disease. Dr. Paul Tumeh is working to identify a more exact and personalized treatment for patients with metastatic melanoma by identifying determinants of clinical response to the anti-PD1 (programmed cell death protein 1) antibody MK-3475. Furthering the investigation of metastatic tumors’ microenvironment as potential predictive markers of response to treatment. USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center Dr. Agnieszka Kobielak and Dr. Uttam K. Sinha strive to characterize new biomarkers of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in order to identify diagnostic biomarkers of invasion and potential drug targets that would block invasion. Dr. Kevin McDonnell seeks to enhance the understanding of the genetic and biological bases of adolescent and young adult (AYA) related neoplasms by performing comprehensive genomic assessment of the germ line and tumor genomes of AYA patients with cancer utilizing innovative next generation sequencing technologies. Working to immediately impact the health outcomes of AYA patients by employing these assessments to inform genetic and therapeutic decision-making. These four projects join a meaningful and varied list of innovative research for underfunded cancers funded by Kure It. When we come together to support research we are investing in future generations and furthering our own chance at a long, happy and healthy life. We hope you will continue to join us as we FIGHT FOR A KURE!
