Pianos are some of the biggest and heaviest instruments in the world. Fortunately, a piano’s weight really does not cause any issues until it is time to move it. Being that your piano not only weighs a lot, but is also worth a lot, you should take caution when moving it to your Phoenix storage unit and then to the new house. The following are some tips to keep in mind if you ever have to move or store your precious – and heavy – piano: Get a climate controlled storage unit. Your piano is very sensitive to humidity and temperature fluctuations. Like furniture that is made of wood, your piano can warp or otherwise be ruined if the weather is hot or the air is humid. Pay a professional to move your piano. You know how much your piano is worth and you also know it will cost a large amount to fix your piano, should anything happen to it. If you hire a professional who knows how to properly move your piano and has the right insurance, you will not have to worry about whether or not your piano will suffer any damage during the move. Also, be sure to contact your storage facility to ensure they will allow the moving company access to your storage unit when they are moving your piano. Rent a storage unit that is large enough for the piano. Your piano should be stored upright on its legs. You should never store a piano on its side. Make sure to get a unit that will fit the dimensions of your piano and other storage items. It is important not to store any heavy items or boxes on top of the piano, so consider taking that into account when you are looking into different units’ sizes. Clean piano surfaces Use appropriate piano polish to ensure that all wood surfaces of your piano are clean while it is stored. Do not ever clean the keys with polish, though. Instead, you should run a slightly damp cloth across the keys. Cover the piano Once you have cleaned and polished the piano, place a cotton sheet over the piano to protect it from any dust that it would accumulate while stored. The cotton sheet will allow your piano to “breathe” while it is stored, so never use a plastic or other similarly restrictive material. Allow the piano to rest When the moving is completely over and your piano is finally moved into the new home, you are probably going to be itching to play it. However, it is best for the health of your piano to allow it some time to rest in the new home before you get it tuned. A few weeks should be ample time for your piano to become acclimated to the new environment. At US Storage Centers in Phoenix, we understand how important your piano is to you.
