First of all, if you’re owed a refund from the security deposit of your old place, make sure to keep the name, telephone number, and address of the apartment manager, and follow up if you have not received your money within 2 weeks of vacating the property. If you made a pet deposit, don’t forget to get that back as well. 2. If you’ve always been on time with your utility bills, request a good customer letter. It could save you on the utility deposit for the new place. 3. Arrange all the utility and service transfers ahead of time, to avoid overlapping charges. 4. Try selling items you don’t want and need, before thinking about giving it away or donating it. Find out what local consignment stores would pay for your items. Hold a moving sale, place a classified ad in the local paper and/or list your items safely on the Internet since most places are free. 5. Before selling or giving anything away, make sure that you know how much each item is worth. You might get a surprise. If you’re not sure of the value and you can’t find it on the internet, check out your local appraisers. Some of them may offer free appraisals. 6. If you’re donating any items to charity, ask for receipts. You can use those receipts to claim tax deductions and save money on your federal income tax. 7. Check daily on sites like Groupon.com and LivingSocial.com for discounts and coupons. You can find savings opportunities on almost anything there, from dining and groceries to home furnishings. You can also Google “your city name + coupons” and see what offers are available in your neck of the woods. 8. You can save the money you’d otherwise spend eating out during the moving process, by making meals ahead of time, which you can freeze. 9. If you’re moving with pets, ask one of your friends or family members to pet-sit for a day or two. You’ll save money on kennel fees, and it will be a better experience for your pet. 10. As your bank for a newcomer kit. The kit can offer coupons, or free products and services as a welcome to your new community. 11. Boxes can get expensive. So before spending money on purchasing them, go to your local liquor store, grocery store and pharmacy, and ask if they have any boxes they don’t need. You’d be surprised at how often they have boxes they toss. Also try restaurants and fast food places. 12. Save more money by gathering the rest of your packing materials from the local recycling center. 13. Shortly after you’ve moved into your new place, you’re likely to get offers for free or discounted products and services in the mail. Don’t be hasty and toss that envelope, take a look and see if there’s anything in there that you could use or need. For more weekly tips, join us on Facebook.
