Out here in the desert, one would not normally associate a place like Phoenix with mountains. Believe it or not, we actually do have one. Known as Camelback Mountain, this lonely lump of rock found between Arcadia and Paradise Valley is the outdoor hub for virtually everybody who lives here. There is a lot to be said when a mountain in the desert can claim to be so much fun. So let’s look into this a bit. An Imposing Mass, Indeed At an altitude of 1,280 feet, it is really quite difficult to go anywhere in the city without being able to see it. Towering over the sandy and rocky landscape, it lends its name from two different sources. The primary source comes from its physical resemblance to a camel with the two peaks representing the hump and head. The second source comes from a long road known as Camelback Boulevard that starts in nearby Scottsdale. Recreation Aplenty to be Had Camelback Mountain is easily the place to be for any kind of outdoor recreation. A designated city park, there is no development along the slopes or at the peak, keeping this area pure for outdoor enthusiasts. It is an especially popular rock climbing location with climbers from all over the country coming to it to conquer its steep sandstone cliffs. The Praying Monk formation, in particular, is a popular wall, rising to over a hundred feet. Another popular pastime any time of the year on Camelback Mountain is hiking. There are two trails, both of which are over a mile long. Considered extremely strenuous with steep grades and plenty of rocks, trainers and seasoned hikers take advantage of both the Echo Canyon Trail and the Cholla Trail to stay active. Both trails ascend to the upper peak of the mountain, where you can get some breathtaking views of the surrounding valley. Truly, Camelback Mountain is the envy of outdoorsmen anywhere. Check it out sometime and see what the hype is about. Message brought to you by US Storage Centers in Phoenix, AZ. US Storage Centers 4860 North 83rd Avenue Phoenix, AZ 85033 (866) 858-7031
