The winter season comes with Holidays, snow for many, and the perfect time for skiing, snowboarding, or ice-skating with the family. It also comes with sweaters, winter clothes and blankets that were hiding in storage during the summertime. As you’re making the transition and are getting ready to store all your out-of-season goods, it’s important to keep your items safe from the winter temperatures. So here are a couple of tips on how to properly store your items during winter: #1. Before putting anything away in you self-storage unit, think about how the cold weather will affect the stored items. Certain items can rough through the exposure to low temperatures, while others will need the protection of a stable humidity level. Typically, items like bicycles, camping gear and patio sets are safe in cold storage spaces, while wooden or leather furniture, plastics and glass should be stored in a climate-controlled self storage unit as the price to replace or fix, might be higher than the price of maintaining a constant temperature in your storage unit. Ask any of our facility managers if this type of unit is what you need. #2. Clean the items before putting them in the storage locker, and make sure that they are perfectly dry. When the temperature drops, any moisture lurking around will turn to ice and when the temperature raises, it will melt and damage your items. On that note, try to avoid using plastic tarps as they can lock in moisture. Use cotton or wool covers instead. Moisture will encourage mold and mildew which can permanently cause harm to your items. #3. If storing any tools that require gas (I.e.: lawn mowers), drain the gas tanks before storage.
