Just southeast of Tucson, is Davis-Monthan Air Force Base; home of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of grounded B-52 bombers, fighter jets, helicopters, and several other types of military aircraft. For people who don’t live next door to the spectacle, Google Earth gives you an awesome aerial view of the phenomenon. It is a gentle reminder that even though you aren’t using something, it will still have value to you someday. Your own Davis-Monthan Base Our Tucson self storage facility can also be seen on Google Earth, but with our facility, only you can see the contents of your unit. You probably have a house full of items you no longer use. But you might use them someday. You should keep them all, just don’t keep them underfoot in your house. Here are some items you may be keeping at home that would be better kept at your very own storage unit. Exercise Equipment – You are going to get in shape someday—maybe even tomorrow. You think that every day. But now your equipment is just taunting you. And since it occupies half of the TV room, your family has even started encouraging you to use it or get rid of it. Not today, but soon. Let’s put it in storage until then. Kitchen appliances – Nothing is quite as enticing as the latest small kitchen appliance that does it all. For you it was the ultimate juicer. You were going to juice your way to health. You paid extra for the best juicer available only to use it for a week and then give up. You decided you liked juicing but not with your hectic lifestyle. Perhaps you will take it up later when you have more time. Let’s store it until then. Unfinished projects – It’s not that you are a procrastinator; it’s just that you have priorities. You have several unfinished products taking up room in your house. That white roll-top desk you found for $100 at a garage sale is a good example. Under all that white paint you discovered solid walnut. If you were to strip the paint and give it a hand-rubbed oil finish it would be worth $3000 or more. Right now, your kids need you. You will work on the desk later; right now your son wants help on his jump shot. Items to hand down – With three daughters, you hope one might want your wedding gown. You have kept it preserved in your closet all these years but it takes up so much room. Why not purchase a special wedding dress garment bag to keep it fresh and hang it from the ceiling in your storage unit. It will keep its shape and won’t be constantly scrunched against the wall by the other dresses in your closet. Retirement projects – You have goals—things you want to do someday. But right now you are working around the clock earning money and raising a family. Their needs and wants take up all of your time and energy. That doesn’t stop you from buying a book you might like. And since you plan on putting that art degree to use someday, when you see items on sale that you will need, you buy them now while you can afford it. Who knows what your retirement income will be. When you store items rather than tossing them, the day will come when you need or want that item. When it does, you are more will be more than happy. You will feel very smart—and you are.
