Moving can be not only a stressful experience filled with chaotic twists and unexpected surprises that are entirely out of your control. To top it off, moving is not only challenging physically but moving all your belongings from one location to the next is extremely costly. Boxes, tape, packing paper, packing peanuts, moving trucks, movers, etc... Whichever path we choose, it's bound to add up. So here are some ways to make the move cheaper and more affordable, while still keeping up with the quality we want to give our items: Be wise with the timing of moving homes. It makes a vast, noticeable difference in your wallets when you choose to move out during peak season versus off-peak season. Off-peak season would be considered September to May, therefore, you can score killer discounts and deals from moving companies. Take the seasonal discounts to your advantage and save money with this major moving strategy. Sell your unwanted items in order to make money. Not only is it smart to make gain some extra cash flow after the big move, but selling unwanted items prior to moving will be a bonus. After you've determined which items you're willing to dispose of, collect them all (shoes, clothes, tools, electronics, etc), and put them up for sale. You can sell them in a yard/garage sale, or put them up for sale on sites like eBay, Etsy or Craigslist. Believe it or not, one of the most largest moving expenses when packing up your home comes from the boxes themselves. Cardboard boxes are the most utilized and relied on item during the move, and therefore, the quantity of cardboard boxes adds up. The trick is to turn to second-hand boxes and collect them from places such as home improvement supply store, warehouse, or local business. Who doesn't love free, reusable boxes? Before buying new things for the new home, give Craigslist a look, check out garage sales, flea markets, auctions and consignment stores. You could find items that are almost new or hardly used, which you could buy for cheap or even get for free. Yes, it will require some time and patience in order to collect all the things that you need through these more affordable avenues, but it will pay off in the end. Do not throw your money out the window after the move. Although a recent move to a brand new city will have you feeling thrilled and ready to adventure, make sure not to go overboard with spending money. It is extremely tempting to go over your typical spending budget during the first few weeks of a big move because we are in a new environment. In new environments, we may be fighting the urge to try out new places or buy new items to fill our cozy home. However, do not buy anything useless unless you are 100% certain that it is needed and right for you. We hope these tips will help lower the price of your move after dealing with endless amounts of packing, organizing, transporting, and sorting.
