Why do Marylanders use self storage?

Maryland is a compact, dense state — about 6.27 million people in 2025, most of them along the I-95 corridor between Baltimore and Washington — and its housing reflects that density. In Baltimore City, roughly half of the 251,000 occupied homes are attached rowhouses, many built before cars were common, with no garage, no driveway, and a basement that floods in a wet spring. That is the everyday reason Baltimore households rent storage: there is simply nowhere on the property to put a kayak, a set of winter tires, a motorcycle, or the furniture from a parent's home.

Vehicles are the second reason. Maryland has thousands of miles of tidal shoreline on the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers, and boat and trailer owners in the city and inner suburbs face the same problem as everyone else on a rowhouse block — the trailer does not fit on the street, and neighborhood associations do not want it there. Outdoor vehicle parking a short drive from home, behind a gate with a personal access code, is how many Baltimore boaters and RV owners solve it.

Maryland is also a state of transitions. Johns Hopkins, Morgan State, and University System of Maryland campuses such as Towson and UMBC bring tens of thousands of students to the Baltimore area each fall, and the region's hospitals, federal agencies, and Fort Meade and Aberdeen Proving Ground rotate professionals in and out on multi-year assignments. Month-to-month storage fits a semester, a residency, or a relocation without a long commitment.

What do people ask about self storage in Maryland?

US Storage Centers has one Maryland location: 5117 Belair Road in northeast Baltimore (ZIP 21206), in the Frankford and Gardenville area of Baltimore City, about a mile inside the city line from Overlea and Baltimore County. It offers ground-floor drive-up units, interior hallway units, and outdoor RV, boat, and vehicle parking.

Our Maryland facility offers three kinds of space: ground-floor drive-up units from 5×10 up to 20×30, smaller interior hallway units from 5×5 to 10×10, and outdoor vehicle parking spaces for cars, trailers, boats, and RVs up to about 30 feet. Every unit is on the ground floor — no elevators or stairs.

Not at our Maryland location. The Belair Road facility in Baltimore has drive-up and interior hallway units without climate control. Interior hallway units are shielded from direct sun and weather, but they are not climate controlled. If your items need a regulated temperature and humidity year-round, we would rather tell you that plainly now than have you find out at move-in.

From I-95, take the Moravia Road exit and follow Moravia to Belair Road (U.S. Route 1), then head northeast about a mile. From I-695 (the Baltimore Beltway), exit at Belair Road and head southwest into the city; the facility is on Belair Road at Parkwood Avenue, roughly two miles inside the Beltway. It is about a 15-minute drive northeast of downtown Baltimore.

Yes. The Baltimore – Belair Road facility has outdoor parking spaces in 18-, 20-, and 30-foot lengths for cars, trailers, boats, and RVs, plus large ground-floor drive-up bays from 10×25 to 20×30 that many customers use as enclosed vehicle storage. Wide drive aisles make it easy to pull a trailer in and out.

As long as you need. Every US Storage Centers rental is month-to-month with no long-term contract, so a unit can bridge a few weeks between closing on one home and moving into the next, or hold a household's furniture through a year-long renovation. You can reserve or rent online in minutes, or stop by the office.

Our Belair Road facility sits on the northeast edge of Baltimore City, minutes from Overlea, Rosedale, Parkville, Nottingham, Perry Hall, and White Marsh in Baltimore County. Belair Road runs straight out to the Beltway, so county residents reach us without crossing downtown.
