Yesterday we talked about sports enthusiasts and how they use their Lancaster self storage unit. Today we're talking about a different kind of enthusiast. The Quilter and other Crafters People who like crafts can sometimes become addicted. Quilting just might be the top craft that people get completely hooked on. If you don’t understand how quilting could be an addiction then you haven’t met a real quilter. Typically quilters’ addiction is so intense they outgrow their homes. Rather than buy a new home, they usually expand their craft into a storage unit at Lancaster Self Storage. Here is how many quilters do it. Getting the right size Their first instinct is to rent the smallest unit available, 5’ x 5’. However quilters soon realize that size doesn’t work for their craft. Quilters don’t want a unit to fit their current needs; they want a unit that will allow for growth and expansion. Many chose instead the 10’ x 10’ inside unit on the first floor. They not only need storage for their “stash,” (fabric saved, catalogued, and a resource for future quilts), they need room for quilting frames, quilting frame stands, and the attachments they will buy for their machine quilter that they plan on buying in the future. They also need room to compare fabric. Setting up the unit Most quilters realize they will have to plan well to get everything in the unit and organized for easy access. Many decide to buy shelving units, two for each side of the room. The shelves would hold all of their different colored and textured fabric, some in full width and a lot of it already cut into workable sizes. The tops of the shelves hold plastic bins with tight lids to hold multiple quilts in different stages of completion, as well as quilts that have been finished but are being stored until friends and relatives need an elegant gift. The back wall would be where most quilters store their quilting frames and stands that were currently taking up a parking spot in their garage. The 6’ space between the two shelves allows room for sorting through fabric and designs to make sure they have the fabric needed to match and piece into a quilt before she took them home. Many put a table in this space. Most quilters are happy to move everything to their new storage unit. They are often surprised how much space their quilting material and supplies took up in their home. It is a small price to pay considering many skilled quilters, usually have one or two rooms in their home dedicated to quilting. It is nice to have Lancaster Self Storage as an option.
