If you’re like most Americans, you probably have a lot of electronics. You probably paid a lot of money for your electronics and understandably, you want to keep them safe from damage and theft. For most people, keeping electronics in secure storage units is a way to protect valuable electronics. Keep Items in their Original Boxes The easiest way to ensure that your electronics fit their boxes and that you can easily access them is to keep each electronic item and all of its components in its original box. Hold onto the cushioning material, such as stiff styrofoam, that came in the original box so you can protect your electronics from damage from impact while they are in storage. Lean Large Monitors Against the Wall Large monitors should never be kept on the floor. Instead, store them upright, leaned against the wall. You might also want to drape thick blankets or cloths over them to further prevent damage in the event of an impact. Keep large monitors away from any area of the unit where they could be subject to a collision with another item or suffering impact with an item that falls from a high shelf. Do Not Store Items on Top of Electronics Electronics should not be used to support lighter items, no matter how light those other items are. When a component within an electronic item is crushed or otherwise damaged, the item can either be very expensive or difficult to repair or be destroyed forever. Detach Wires and Other External Components Detach all wires from your electronics and wrap them up neatly. Keep wires and external components with the electronics to which they belong, either in the same box or in a nearby, clearly labeled container. Some individuals find it useful to color code electronics systems, wrapping each component and wire that belong to a certain system in the same colored tape. Find a way to keep your systems together that makes sense to you and follow it consistently. Protect Screens with Anti-Static Foam Anti-static foam is a cushioning material that can prevent electrical currents from transferring between electronic devices or from a human being to an electronic device. Consider using this product to protect your screens from an inadvertent transfer of electricity. Keep Electronics Out of Extreme Heat or Cold Extreme temperatures can damage electrical systems and mechanical parts inside them. To protect your electronics and other items that can be sensitive to extreme temperatures, rent a climate controlled storage unit.
