Anyone who’s had kids knows that they grow fast. And when kids grow quickly, it means clothes that fit one day and don’t the next. And many parents may find that their kids need clothes for six-month olds, for example, even when they are only at the four-month stage. But what do you do with everything they’ve grown out of? Especially when it comes to your first child growing out of clothes, you may want to hang onto them in case you decide to add to your family at a later date. Repurchasing all of the same clothes for the next baby seems like a complete waste. There are ways to ensure that you hold onto kids’ clothes that you don’t want to get rid of, while not turning your home into a hoarding station, taking up a lot of your time and energy. Many parents find themselves overrun with boxes and bins filled with their child’s old clothes, while many more outfits fill up drawers in closets, simply waiting to be packed away. Figuring out how to properly care for them (in addition to simply finding some space to put them) while storing them in your house is also, in and of itself, an overwhelming task Keep Them Safe & Sorted While it is always important to take a close look at these items and ask yourself if each one is worth keeping, placing these items into a storage facility is a much safer option for them than in random rooms or corners of your home. Bugs and rodents are a huge issue for most families, particularly if the clothes have any stains or odors, and/or if the garage where you’re storing them has climate or outside exposure issues. When it comes to storing your kids’ clothes in the storage unit, many people find that first sorting by size and type of item makes the most sense. That way, you can easily access your child’s current size and the next size up for the most convenience. Plastic over Cardboard Many people find that relying on clear plastic bins with (labeled) lids makes the most sense in terms of being able to see what you stored in the container when you go back to your storage unit and keeping bugs out of the item (although, note that with storage facilities, typically the facility managers will control for climate and insect/rodent issues, minimizing the chances of your items being destroyed). We do not recommend that you use garbage bags, as they can easily trap moisture and allow bugs in. Our Facilities in Memphis At US Storage Centers, we are here for all of your storage needs.
