When you think about moving with children, many of us would hope for the best, but expect the worst. There are many things to accomplish and nearly never enough time to get them done. From staging your home to sell quickly to sorting through everyone’s belongings and packing for the whole crew to planning the exact move date, it can all be overwhelming, even without kids. Moving is stressful for everyone, regardless of whether we are an adult or a child. When there are children involved, moving tends to be all the more nerve-wracking and cumbersome. Fortunately, at US Storage Centers in Memphis, we are happy to share these great tips to help you make your next move less stressful and more enjoyable for your children. Toddlers It does not matter if your kids are toddlers or teenagers: planning is essential in order to make your move go more smoothly. Toddlers have short attention spans, so you may need to create a list of activities that will keep your toddler busy while you are staging your home, sorting through your belongings and packing them, receiving estimates from different movers, and completing everything else that you need to accomplish. Prepare Activities Keep things simple and involve them in what you are doing. One thing is for sure – if you are participating in something, your toddler will want to be part of it, too. So, put them to work! Give your toddler a spray bottle that is partially full of water (a full spray bottle is probably too heavy) and a cloth or an old (clean) sock and let them clean off chairs, tables, shelves, or anything else you need help with. A dry mop is safe enough for a toddler and it can definitely give you some time to get to things you need to accomplish. If nothing else works, give them some bubble wrap or some boxes to play with. School-Aged Children & Teens School-aged children and teens can be a great help, as long as incentives are involved. Grab some treats while you are at the grocery store or come up with other incentives that your children are willing to work for, and then give them a list of age-appropriate tasks that you need help with. Put on some music that your children enjoy and turn up the volume – music makes everything more enjoyable. You can also consider allowing your children to invite some friends, and put them to work, too. Make packing and moving fun and the time will go by as the work is getting accomplished, and everyone will be much less stressed.
