So, you’re moving to Tucson—congratulations. We love it here. It’s a great place to raise a family. If you have yet to move in, here is an idea to make your move here easier. First check out one of our storage units at our Tucson self storage facility on 1st Avenue. Depending on the size of your new home, we can help you pick the right size of storage unit you'll need. We can do this over the phone if you are calling from out of state so we can have your unit ready when you get here. Unpacking – Simplified One of the most difficult aspects of moving in, is the feeling that you have to do it all at once, especially when the inside of your house starts looking like the warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Moving furniture into rooms full of boxes can be awkward. Your initial reaction might be “Is all of this stuff really ours?” You feel incredible pressure to move in and organize all at once. If you are lucky after the first day, everyone will find a place to sleep. It is much easier to visit your storage unit first. You can back your truck up to your unit and unload everything you don’t immediately need. We suggest you move into your home with beds, essential furniture, and your clothing first. Eating pizza and Chinese take out for the first couple days won’t be so bad. Organizing your furniture and beds in an empty house is so much easier than trying to negotiate your away around a sea of boxes. Once you have organized your furniture and put your clothes away, you are ready for a comfortable night’s rest. Time to eat! The next step is to move into your kitchen. Start retrieving boxes labeled for your kitchen from your storage unit and start putting your kitchen together. You might want to start with the coffee maker—the coffee shop was getting expensive. You can all help bring the boxes into the kitchen but ultimately the chief cook and bottle washer, whoever that is, should be the person to organize the kitchen while the rest of the family finishes organizing the furniture, connecting electronics, and taking any cardboard in for recycling. With any luck your first home cooked meal is only 24 – 48 hours away. Personal Items The next step is for each person to retrieve the boxes labeled with their personal items. Each person can be responsible to see that their own boxes make it to their room. Each person can then organize and decorate their room as they please. If you have a nursery to unpack, you can all help with that if you want. The last step The last step is very important if you want your new home to keep the same level of organization it has now. You might think that the remaining items in your storage unit need to come home now but that isn’t the case. Many of the items that remain could easily stay in storage, particularly if you aren’t planning to use them any time soon. As you sort through the items, determine which items you will need to keep at home. The rest can stay. You may want to move them to a smaller storage unit for economy’s sake; but unless you have way too much house, why would you want to put more stuff in your house before you have even get acquainted with your new home? Leave the rest with us for as long as you want. It will be here when you need it.
