The city of Shreveport is one of the largest cities in all of Louisiana. But what many people don’t realize is that it only makes up half of the story. Its sister city across the river, Bossier City, is just as rife with history and character as its bigger counterpart. With rising opportunities in employment, Bossier City is quickly becoming a phoenix among the woodlands and swamps of Louisiana. Humble Origins A product of Manifest Destiny, Bossier City started off as simple plantation in 1830 owned by James Cane. A regular trading partner with the Caddo Indians, his homestead located on Bennett’s Bluff became a popular rest stop for settlers heading to Texas and California due to the safety his land provided as well as the ferry he ran across the Red River. By 1840, Bossier City was born with more than two hundred wagons passing through in a week. By 1883, it was one of the first incorporated cities in northern Louisiana. Where We are Today Today, the population is composed of 61,315 people who dominantly work in the gambling industry, which is extremely prevalent in the area. Bossier City and Shreveport are both hubs of gambling activity in the Deep South as well as in Texas, where gambling is currently illegal. Though the city has undergone tough economic times, particularly in the late 80s and 90s, Bossier City has seen a resurgence thanks to more industry moving in such as manufacturing. Bossier City is not the best place to raise a family due to the high number of casinos, which tend to attract seedier folk. However, it is a perfect place for singles as well as college students—Louisiana Tech University hosts a campus here, which doles out Bachelor’s degrees across a wide number of fields. So if you are planning on moving to Bossier City, you certainly have made a solid choice. They don’t call us the “Entertainment Capital of the South” for nothing!
