Homes in the East Valley are Small The average age for a Phoenix home is about 34 years old. Back when most of the homes here were built, the average size was around 1,735 square feet. The latest stats show homes in the western United States are now an average of 2,517 square feet, which actually lags behind the national average of 2,646 square feet. Nope. You’re not imagining it. Homes in the east valley are actually smaller than homes in other parts of the country. The Homes Here Were Designed for a Different Era Not only were the homes built smaller back when most of the residences here were built, but people used the space differently. When the homes here were designed, 65% of American households had one car, or no car at all. Now, more than 56% have two or more cars. In the early 1980s, only 8% of all households had a computer. Nowadays, it’s impossible to imagine a home without a computer, as well as all the gear that comes with one. Back then, 49% of the population had only one TV in the house. Now, 55% of all homes have at least three. Not surprisingly, the number of families with a stay-at-home parent has declined, too. Think about all the things you keep just for work- a wardrobe, office supplies, business materials, and more. Home designs from that era are also different. Many master bedrooms often have only one small closet, and family storage space is minimal at best. Where are Phoenicians Supposed to Keep their Things? Basically, Phoenicians got the short end of the stick when it comes to the way houses are built. They’re smaller and were laid out in a way befitting of an era that passed long ago. Moreover, we have to have more things to keep up with the demands of today. It’s not unreasonable to have two cars, a couple of TVs, and a computer area, but our houses can’t hold all of it. Even still, we yearn for the nostalgia that comes with holiday décor. We don’t have as many stay at home parents, so we play hard on our days off work. That requires that we keep decorations, sports equipment, clothes, and other goods off-site. In order to keep up with today’s life in homes built for yesterday, self-storage in Phoenix is pretty much a necessity. If you need a little extra space, you’ve got good company.
