There’s a ton of excitement here in Alhambra and within the US Storage Centers family because the Special Olympics World Games are taking place throughout the Los Angeles region. Charles Byerly, president and CEO of our company, even carried the torch! “It was such an honor to run with friends and family carrying the torch,” said Mr. Byerly. “Those that donated their time on behalf of the Special Olympics were fantastic, and there was such great energy!” The City of Alhambra has also partnered with the City of Monterey Park as a “Host City”. Delegations of athletes from all around the world will be welcomed to our beautiful city. They will meet residents, participate in cultural activities, and practice for their competitions. It will be a fun opportunity to make new friends. The Olympic Games will be held from July 25-Aug 2 throughout several venues in Los Angles, including athlete villages at USC and UCLA, and opening ceremonies at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. About 7,000 athletes will participate in 25 sports, which include everything from aquatics and volleyball to roller skating and sailing. A couple of our favorite sports this year are bocce, kayaking, and table tennis – we’re pretty excited to cheer on these athletes along with 500,000 spectators and 30,000 volunteers. Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded the Special Olympics in 1968, just five years after she began a summer day camp at her home in Maryland for children with intellectual disabilities. The games were held at Chicago’s Soldier Field, and included a thousand individuals with intellectual disabilities competing in track and field and swimming. Since then, the games have been held in several states throughout the USA, Austria, Canada, Ireland, Japan, China, Greece, and South Korea. The goal of the events is to provide athletic training and opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. All of the athletes get to participate in the fun and comradery of sports while developing their physical fitness and talents. Every two years the Games alternate between summer and winter sports.
