Six Questions to Ask Before You Choose
Before you look at sizes or compare prices, answer these six questions. Your answers will make the right choice obvious.
1. How long do I actually need this?
A few weeks during a move is different from a year while you sort out a life transition. Month-to-month leases give you flexibility; longer commitments may offer lower rates. Know your timeline before you commit.
2. How often will I need to get in?
If you're accessing your unit weekly or more, drive-up access on the ground floor is worth prioritizing. If you're storing items you rarely need, location and price matter more than access convenience.
3. What's the most sensitive thing I'm storing?
Even one item that needs temperature protection—wood furniture, electronics, artwork, wine—means the whole unit should be climate controlled. Don't mix climate-sensitive items into a standard unit to save money; the cost of damage exceeds the savings.
4. What will my move-in day actually look like?
Are you hiring movers or doing it yourself? The answer affects whether you need drive-up access, an elevator-accessible floor, or a wide corridor. Visit the facility before move-in day if you can.
5. What's my real budget—including everything?
The advertised monthly rate is a starting point. Add the one-time admin fee, prorated first month, protection plan, and a lock. The full move-in cost will be calculated upfront in the online rental flow, with full transparency. Use our storage unit size guide to compare options across unit sizes.
6. Am I storing a collection or filling space?
A well-organized unit with a center aisle and labeled boxes is easier to use than a packed-full one. Plan your unit layout before move-in—not after.
