The pressure to keep a clean and organized home around the holidays tends to increase with each passing day. This is the time of year when friends and family come from out of town to visit and spend some quality time with you. And, even when you do not expect guests, you can still anticipate some unexpected company here and there throughout the holiday season. This is also the time to pull out the holiday decorations. This means that you have no choice but to take some time and declutter your home to make room for your new décor. With that said, here at US Storage Centers in Missouri City, we have come up with four great tips to help you declutter your home for the holidays. Decluttering For the Holidays Eliminate the Worst Cluttered Areas First – You know those areas where clutter just tends to pile up? It might be your kitchen counter or the coffee table in the living room. Start with those areas first, work on one area until it is complete, and that feeling of accomplishment once that clutter spot is cleaned will give you the boost you need to undertake more decluttering tasks. Organize Your Kitchen – The kitchen is where most of us entertain our holiday guests, so that is most likely the most important area to have decluttered in your entire home. You were able to clean the worst areas of your home, so you can handle your kitchen. First things first – wash the dishes, the counters and get your kitchen back to its original state. Then, start at one end of the kitchen and clean out one drawer or cupboard at a time. If you find that you have cluttered your kitchen with items you no longer use, donate them or find a better place to store them. Clean Out the Front or Hall Closet – This is typically the biggest culprit in the house because it is easy to open that door and stuff things in there without regard. This is most likely the place where you will hang guests’ coats and jackets when they visit. Figure out what should stay and what needs to be stored somewhere else. You may want to put an organizer in this closet to make separating and storing items a simple process. Pack in Clear Plastic Totes – If you are packing away your regular décor to make space for your holiday decorations, pack everything into clear plastic totes so that you can see what is in each container. Then, when it is time to pack up after the holiday, you can use the clear plastic storage containers to store the items you won’t need until the next holiday season.
