You have too much stuff and junk. But, to you, it’s not just stuff and junk. In fact, it’s all of your precious belongings - things that you have worked hard for and collected during your lifetime. So, you decided to get a storage unit. Now, you need to organize. Size of Unit The size of the unit that you get will play a large role in how you will need to organize it. If you have a smaller unit that you are trying to squeeze the maximum amount of stuff into, you will need to pay close attention to how you are organizing it. If you are getting a larger storage unit in which you will have extra space, you will be able to be more flexible with the organization. Front to Back When you are first moving your belongings into the storage unit, keep in mind that you want to put the things you will not need access to in the rear. The things that you will need access to more frequently will need to be kept as close to the door of the storage unit as possible. Make a Plan Most people just pack up their belongings, take them to the storage unit, and start packing them in. But, you should instead consider making a plan that includes noting which items you will need access to, which items that can be packed away for the long-term, where you want to keep fragile items, and where you want sentimental items. If you are storing things like mattresses or a sofa or a kayak, you need to think about how they will be laid out, whether or not you want to store anything on top of them or to cover them, and whether they can be kept on their sides. By making a plan, you will have a better idea of where you should put things when you get to the storage unit. Not to mention it will make future trips back to the storage unit to grab things much easier and quicker. Heavy on Bottom Obviously, it is common sense that the heavier boxes and items will be on the floor and the lighter items will be stacked toward the top of any piles. Just realize that if you are storing a mattress, you may not want to pile boxes on the mattress because they could ruin the springs over time. Make Aisles If you happen to need to access anything toward the back of your storage unit, you will need to be able to maneuver to that part of the storage. That is why making aisles between your furniture and boxes is essential. If you need any advice on how to pack and organize your storage unit, feel free to ask us here at US Storage in Chatsworth.
