The large suburb of Peoria, Arizona is one of the best places in the country to live. It was even named so by Money Magazine back in 2008! But being so close to Phoenix, practically a part of the giant metro area, you might think that all its influence is generated by the vibrant city. This is actually quite far from the truth as Peoria has many things to distinguish it as more than just a suburb. Population and Demographics As of 2013, the population has been estimated to be 162,592, a figure which has been increasing steadily since the 90s when the Phoenix area started to boom. The large majority of households identify as white with a median annual income of $58,388. Most households in Peoria are also traditional four-member homes with 62% of homes following this fabric. However, Peoria is also a popular area of bachelors in the Phoenix area, as a quarter of the current population is single. A Brief History The Phoenix area, Peoria included, was originally inhabited by ancient Native American tribes who followed a hunter-gatherer lifestyle in the Arizona desert. Traces of their existence can be found all over the place, but especially at Casa Grande National Heritage Site, located about thirty minutes southeast of the town. Peoria was incorporated as a town in the Arizona Territory in 1888 when a post office was built there to service a population of twenty-seven. Peoria Today Since then, Peoria has become a booming suburb with many public facilities available to keep locals happy. Many parks have been built within city limits and the school district is one of the best in the country. This makes Peoria an ideal place to raise a family. Many of the old buildings set up during the days of the wild West have been preserved as museums dedicated to the area’s natural and cultural history. So when you are looking at moving to the Phoenix area, do not overlook Peoria as simply another suburb with very little to do within the city itself. It is actually quite a charming place with a vibrant history. All you need to do is look a little carefully to find it.
